Great question! I looked on Purdue's OWL page (a "go to" for many librarians) and found the following answers (cut and pasted) that covers most areas within Television Shows. THIS IS IN MLA FORMAT. If you need APA you can go to the same website to view.

Recorded Television Episodes

Cite recorded television episodes like films (see above). Begin with the episode name in quotation marks. Follow with the series name in italics. When the title of the collection of recordings is different than the original series (e.g., the show Friends is in DVD release under the title Friends: The Complete Sixth Season), list the title that would help researchers to locate the recording. Give the distributor name followed by the date of distribution.

Broadcast TV or Radio Program

Begin with the title of the episode in quotation marks. Provide the name of the series or program in italics. Also include the network name, call letters of the station followed by the date of broadcast and city.

Netflix, Hulu, Google Play

Generally, when citing a specific episode, follow the format below.

An Entire TV Series

When citing the entire series of a TV show, use the following format.

A Specific Performance or Aspect of a TV Show

If you want to emphasize a particular aspect of the show, include that particular information. For instance, if you are writing about a specific character during a certain episode, include the performer’s name as well as the creator’s.

Forget, “Netflix and Chill.” This post is about “Netflix and Research.” Netflix is a video streaming service, filled with numerous educational documentaries, entertainment videos, and original series. With thousands of movies and shows to choose from, it’s easy to understand why it has popped up in so many citations on Citation Machine.

If you’re wondering how to cite a movie you’ve seen on Netflix, look no further. This post explains how to cite a movie on Netflix in MLA, APA, and Chicago/Turabian. The example featured here is for a documentary titled, The Ivory Game.

To cite a Netflix video, you’ll need the following pieces of information:

On a website:

Movie Title. Directed by First name Last name, performance by First name Last name*, Production Company, Year published. Netflix, URL.

On an app:

Movie Title. Directed by First name Last name, performance by First name Last name*, Production Company, Year published. Netflix app.

*Note: It isn’t always necessary to include the director and performer’s name(s). Include the names of any individuals who your research focuses on or names of individuals to help the reader locate the exact source themselves. It is acceptable to include producers, writers, creators, narrators, and other positions.

Here’s how the above example could be cited in MLA formatting:

On a website:

The Ivory Game. Directed by Kief Davidson & Richard Ladkani, Volcan Productions, 2016. Netflix, www.netflix.com/title/80117533.

On an app:

The Ivory Game. Directed by Kief Davidson & Richard Ladkani, Volcan Productions, 2016. Netflix app.

If you need help with in-text and parenthetical citations, CitationMachine.net can help. Our MLA citation generator is simple and easy to use!

Last name of Documentary Producer, F. M. (Producer), & Last name of Documentary Director, F. M. (Director). (Year of release). Movie title . Retrieved from Netflix’s homepage URL*

*Since this video is found through a subscription database, APA recommends using the URL of the homepage.

Here’s how the above example would be cited as an APA citation:

Kohler, W., Davidson, K., Knopfler, W, & DiCaprio, L. (Producers), & Ladkani, R., Davidson, K. (Directors). (2016). The ivory game . Retrieved from https://www.netflix.com

Director’s Last name, First name, dir. Movie Title. Production Company, Year of release. URL.

Director/Producer/Writer's Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial if given. (Job Title). (Year film was produced). Title of film: Subtitle if any . Production Company.

Note: For other countries, list the city name and the country.

Example:

Hallam, J. (Producer, Writer), & Lam, K. (Producer, Director). (2010). Staff relations in healthcare: Working as a team . Insight Media.

Notes:

In-Text Paraphrase:

(Producer/Director/Writer's Last Name, Year)

Example: (Hallam & Lam, 2010)

Note: This example has two people to credit, so both last names are given)

In-Text Quote:

(Producer/Director/Writer's Last Name, Year, Timestamp)

Example: (Hallam & Lam, 2010, 2:30)

Note: Because the timestamp serves the same purpose in a video as page numbers, paragraph numbers or section headings, you include it in the in-text citation. Include only the beginning timestamp.

When the Director, Producer and/or Writer is not known: Start the citation with the film title.

Title of film: Subtitle if any . (Year film was produced). Production Company if Known.

Note: For other countries, list the city name and the country.

Example:

Era of viruses . (2006). Films for the Humanities and Sciences.

In-Text Paraphrase:

(Title of Film, Year)

Example: (Era of Viruses, 2006)

Note: Italicize the title of the film and capitalize the words for the in-text citation.

In-Text Quote:

(Title of Film, Year, Timestamp)

To cite an episode of a TV show in APA Style, list the writer(s) and director(s) as authors, the date when the episode aired, the name of the episode, the season and episode number, “TV series episode” in square brackets, the executive producers of the whole series, the title of the series, and the production company or companies.

The format for citing an entire TV series is more straightforward. The executive producers are listed as authors, and the range of years given is for the series’ entire run.

When listing writers and directors for an episode, each person listed should be individually labeled as either “Writer” or “Director.” If one person combined both roles, write “Writer & Director” in the parentheses.

Don’t label them collectively, as it can cause confusion.

Executive producers are labeled collectively, since they all share the same role.

No role specifications are included in in-text citations, and “et al.” is used when more than three total contributors are listed.

Finally, note that when a series is produced by multiple production companies, you should list them all, separated by semicolons.
