The most reliable way to create a hanging indent is through the Paragraph settings.

First, highlight the text you want to format, like an entry in a bibliography. Then, head up to the "Home" tab. In the "Paragraph" section of the ribbon, look for the small arrow in the bottom-right corner. Clicking that opens the main Paragraph dialog box.

Inside that window, find the "Indentation" area. You'll see a dropdown menu labelled "Special." Just select "Hanging" from that list. Word usually defaults to a standard half-inch indent, but you can easily adjust that value if you need to. Click "OK," and your formatting is all set. It's a key tool for properly formatting citations and reference lists.
