How to download cc on sims 4 microsoft?
With The Sims 5 release date on the horizon, The Sims 4 shows no signs of slowing down, with new official expansion packs still being released regularly, and more Sims 4 mods and CC packs than ever. So, while you wait for the new game – and even long after it’s here – here’s how to install Sims 4 CC and mods, to overhaul your gameplay and carry on updating your Sims 4 Sim, furniture, recipes with custom content.
To download and install Sims 4 CC or mods, simply download the chosen content and move the downloaded file into the appropriate game folder, which we expand on here.
There are two folders used for custom content; store Lots and Sims in the ‘Tray’ folder, and everything else goes in ‘mods’.
While it’s simple enough in theory, there are a few different file types depending on what type of custom content or mods you’re downloading. Here’s a breakdown of different types of custom content file:
Custom content
Most custom content (for items like clothing and objects) and mods will use the .package file extension. These require no formal installation and simply need to be placed within the mods folder or a relevant subfolder within that for them to work.
Lots and Sims
Downloaded Lots and Sims use several different types of files. Lots can be either a .blueprint, .bpi, or .trayitem file, while Sims can be .hhi, .householidbinary, .sgi, or .trayitem file types. Again there are no steps required to install these files past placing them in the Tray folder, or a relevant subfolder within that.
Script mods
Script mods can, again, be one of a few file types; .ts4script, .pyo, .py, or .pyc. .ts4script files can be placed in the mods folder in the same way as .package files, while .pyo, .py, and .pyc files must be left inside their zipped/archive folder inside the mods folder.
Note that the .pyo file type is no longer supported by The Sims 4, and Script mods with that file type will likely be outdated.
Custom content and mods aren’t without their problems, so we heavily recommend organizing your downloaded content well and creating subfolders that categorize the type of content you have downloaded, i.e hairstyles, clothing, objects etc.
This makes it much easier to find and troubleshoot any custom content or mods that aren’t working properly or showing up in your game.
Subfolders can go a maximum of five folders deep before they stop being recognized by the game, which is especially useful for categories like clothing, where you may have a lot of subcategories, like shirts, trousers etc.
Note that Script mods, which usually consist of several files, cannot be placed into subfolders, so we recommend creating a single folder for that Script Mod within the main Sims 4 mods folder, and placing all relevant files there.
You can also rename your files as long as they end in the correct file extension, which is useful for logging the content creator and its item type.
Sims 4 players will need to manually enable any downloaded custom content and mods through the in-game menu. To do this, press ESC, then go to ‘Game Options’, then ‘Other’. From there, you can select ‘Enable custom content and mods’ and ‘Script mods Allowed’ to turn on your custom content.
Note that this can be disabled when EA releases official The Sims 4 patches, so always make sure this is turned back on after a patch has been installed.
It is worth checking after official patches that any extensive mods or Script mods you have installed are compatible with that current version of the game, and if not, turning them off until they are updated in order to prevent any crashes or bugs appearing in your game.
To check your custom content and mods have been installed correctly, you can view this in-game by pressing ESC, then go to ‘Game Options’, then ‘Other’, and clicking ‘View custom content’. The game should list everything that it has successfully installed.
All content relating to a Sim’s visuals, from skin tones down to accessories and clothing, will be in Create-A-Sim mode. Downloaded objects will be viewable in Buy and Build Mode, which you can filter by custom content only by heading to ‘Filter Items’ on the right hand side, selecting ‘Content’, and then ticking ‘custom content’ from the drop down menu.
Downloaded Lots and Sims can be found by heading to the Gallery and going to ‘My Library’. Remember to tick ‘Include custom content’ from the left hand menu, as this will be unticked by default and will prevent you from viewing anything you have downloaded.
There are a plethora of places that you can download Sims 4 custom content from. Check our guide to the best Sims 4 CC downloads, or browse some of the great sites listed below:
Adding custom content to a game is very confusing, especially for players who have no experience with modding games.
So, if you’re ready to add something new to your Sims 4 game but don’t know where to start, you’re in the right place. Find out all the important details about adding custom content to your Sims 4 game.
Before you download all those great mods and custom content for Sims 4, there are a few things you need to do first.
This first one is easy. Go to your game platform, and open your Game Library. Go to the Settings tab and select ‘’Update Game.’’
This is another simple step and probably one you can skip if you already have an extraction tool to open compressed files. Most CC comes in files that end in suffixes like .rar and .zip, but you can’t put them in your Sims 4 game folder as is. You need to extract certain files first.
Sims 4 disables mods/CC by default, but this is an easy fix. To enable mods, follow the steps below:
Remember to do these steps each time you download a new patch for the game because it resets it back to the default setting.
Once you have all the necessary tools, it’s time to download some custom content. When you find the content you want to add to your game, this is how you download and install it:
Documents>Electronic Arts> The Sims 4 > Mods
If you don’t already have a Mods folder, you can create one and paste everything there.
No additional action is needed for ‘’.package’’ files. Just start your game and enjoy your new content.
If you’ve downloaded mods that add venues or characters for your Sims to visit, these are called “lots.” You would download and install lots the same way, except for the file type and where it gets pasted.
So, look for files that end in:
These are typically the suffix for lot content. If you have these files, they go in your tray folder for the game:
Documents>Electronic Arts>The Sims 4>Tray
Lots aren’t automatically installed the way that ‘’.package’’ files are so you need to do an extra step when you start the game:
Script custom content does things like adding custom animations and careers. Installing them is relatively similar to the way you install other mods. It also goes into the Mods folder, but these files have a ‘’.ts4script’’ suffix.
If you use custom scripts, make sure you have it enabled in your game by going to the Game Options in the Main menu and selecting the box that says ‘’Script Mods Allowed.’’
Downloading custom content for Sims 4 happens the same way regardless of whether you’re on a Mac or PC. Check out the instructions above for step-by-step instructions on downloading different types of content files.
PlayStation does not support custom content for Sims 4. The closest you may come to “other” content is The Gallery where other Simmers across different platforms upload their rooms, households, and lots for use. If a Simmer uses custom content, though, you still won’t be able to use it even if it comes from The Gallery.
You can’t download custom content for Sims 4 on Xbox. However, like PlayStation players, you can use The Gallery to access new households, rooms, and lots that others in the Simmer community created and uploaded.
Downloading custom content for Sims 4 on Origin happens the same way as described in the Windows 10 directions above. You need to download and extract the content, cut the appropriate files, and paste them into your Sims 4 folder.
There are quite a few tutorials online about creating custom content for Sims 4. Most creators use a program like Sims 4 Studio (S4S) and another that’s able to save DDS files or Notepad, depending on the type of mod you want to create.
Keep in mind that the tutorials you find may differ depending on what you want it to do. Writing scripts to change animations is different from making cosmetic changes, so you’ll have to look those up on your own.
You can search online for Sims 4 custom content. Some content is available through a creator’s personal Tumblr, like Marvin Sims’ mens’ clothing line and Viiavi’s female fashion line. Websites like The Sims Resource and The Sims Catalog are also an option if you want to look at many different types of content in one place.
Downloading custom content isn’t for everybody. Many CC users claim that it’s the only way that they can play the game as the vanilla Sims 4 gets boring after a while. Ultimately, though, the choice is up to you.
Adding custom content is as simple as downloading the file and cutting and pasting it to the appropriate folder. Just remember that you need to enable mods for your game, or the new content won’t appear.
Enable mods in the Sims 4 by going to the Main menu and then ‘’Game Options.’’ Go to ‘’Other’’ and check the box that enables mods for the game. Make sure to press the ‘’Apply Changes’’ button before leaving the menu.
