Knautia macedonica is that beautiful burgundy-red perennial you see in cottage gardens - and it's quite easy from seed! I've grown it for years:

Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost or direct sow after danger of frost has passed. Surface sow or barely cover - they need light to germinate. Keep at 65-70°F - germination takes 14-30 days.

Transplant seedlings after hardening off, spacing 12-18 inches apart. They prefer full sun and well-draining soil. Once established, they're quite drought tolerant. Deadhead regularly to encourage continuous blooming from summer to fall.

They'll self-sow modestly in good conditions. The deep red flowers are fantastic for cutting and attract butterflies and bees!
