How to remove pvd coating from stainless steel?
From my experience in fabrication: the only reliable method is abrasive blasting or diamond polishing. PVD is extremely hard, so acids or solvents won’t do much. If you don’t have the tools, I’d suggest taking it to a professional metal finishing shop. They can strip and refinish it properly without damaging the steel underneath. DIY works for tiny parts, but for anything larger, pro service is safer.
Removing PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating is tough because it’s bonded at a molecular level to the stainless steel. Sanding or grinding is usually required. I’ve used fine-grit sandpaper with a rotary tool to carefully strip it off, but it takes patience and can scratch the base metal. If it’s just a small area, chemical strippers won’t really work on PVD—mechanical removal is the only option. After removing, you’ll likely need to polish the steel again to restore its finish.
