Spotting has been overhauled in Battlefield V. Even if you were a veteran of the previous games, it’s easy to be a bit confused with how to spot in Battlefield V. It’s a bit different for Scouts, and non-Scouts.
Previously, in Battlefield 1, you had the benefit of being able to spot an enemy quite easily. Merely aim down the sights near an enemy, press R1/RB, and that enemy’s location would be temporarily revealed for teammates.
Scouts could be across the map and easily spot enemies from far away while aiming. This has been changed in Battlefield V.
When you press R1/RB now, you default to marking a location that will ping on your squad members’ maps. Any class can do this. You can still spot an enemy in Battlefield V, but not to the same effect, and like marking maps, anyone can do this.
First, you must be perfectly aimed onto an enemy in order to mark them. It’s much less forgiving than in the previous game where you could be pretty close and it was good enough. If you’re even a little way off, you’re going to mark a location instead.
If you do successfully spot an enemy, instead of that person being revealed completely for a short time, it will now only reveal the last known location to your squad.
Scouts get some advantages in the spotting and marking territory in Battlefield V, although they aren’t as efficient as they once were.
Scouts get gadgets which aid in the location reveal of enemies. Most importantly, there’s the Spotting Scope, which allows you to spot enemies like you did in previous games.
Simply press left on the directional pad to bring it out, and then look down the sight towards enemies.
This will reveal their location to teammates. It’s not as efficient as being able to do this while aiming down the sights of your rifle like you used to, but it will get the job done and get you assist points.
This can be replaced by the Flare Gun when you reach level 4 Scout, which is less precise, but if used correctly in an area with lots of enemies, will reveal everyone in its proximity all at once instead of one by one with vision.
In addition to those two gadgets, there’s the Sniper Decoy, which spots enemies that shoot at it, similar to what it did in previous games.
Finally, specifically for Sniper specialized scouts, when they shoot an enemy, that enemy gets revealed to the team. So make sure that you’re setting up in a good position and locating enemies this way.

Squadplay has been given some welcome TLC in Battlefield 5, as a core tenet of the multiplayer ecosystem. That means you ought to a join and stay in a squad even when playing as a lone soldier, as there’s huge benefits to doing so. For one thing, squadmates can spawn in on each other, and Battlefield 5 encourages players to do so by transitioning to a squad spectator mode whenever they die.
Furthermore, all members of a squad can now revive each other regardless of what class they’re playing as, while Battlefield 5’s scarcity of ammo makes the Support class more important than ever. So, find your three brothers or sisters in arms, make sure that team comp is tip top, and get fighting.
One of Battlefield 5’s biggest new features is the Fortifications system, whereby any player can build (or indeed destroy) defenses at a variety of capture points or chokeholds across all eight of the multiplayer maps available at launch. Instead, prioritise building when your team are tasked with defending a specific perimeter, but try not to leave yourself vulnerable to a stray sniper shot.
When you spawn, you don’t start with much ammo at all. If you’re involved in a lot of engagements right from the get-go, you’ll run out of ammo swiftly. Keep an eye out for supply stations - even from the start of each life, they give you more ammo than you’re carrying.
They’re not just for ammo either. Health doesn’t automatically regenerate the same way as in previous Battlefield games, so you need to rely on either a medic dropping you a health pack or you can heal yourself up at a supply station. There’s only a few on each map, so make sure you take note of where each one is if you need to recover.
There’s been too many occasions when we’ve been playing a first-person shooter, prone on the floor providing covering fire for some teammates when we start hearing shots from behind us. Of course, we’ve had to turn around slowly on the ground to try and return fire, but by that time, we’re long dead.
Now when you’re prone and you turn around 180 degrees, rather than spinning round on the floor, you’ll change position to essentially be on your back. This allows you to turn much quicker and retain your position, so you don’t make yourself more visible by standing up. Hopefully more games follow suit, as it’s a welcome addition and it looks badass.
In addition to customisation options for each member of your company in Battlefield 5, every gun and vehicle in the gun now has its own specialisation tree, which can be levelled up through expenditure of the in-game currency known as Battlefield Coins. These will allow you to deck out your favourite weapons and transport with bespoke abilities and perks, while also encouraging repeated employment of these gadgets to get a better feel for each.
For example, upgrading the MG42 with a larger magazine and faster rate of fire will improve its effectiveness as a suppressive Support weapon, while adding a longer range scope to the Kar 98k with an added damage perk will turn it into a devastating sniper rifle for the Recon lovers. Meanwhile, you might remove the jericho sirens from your Stuka plane to make it less noisy, or outfit your tiger tank with a faster repair ability to last longer in combat. The choice is completely up to you, just don’t forget to make a decision once you’ve earned enough Battlefield Coins to do so.

By implementing Battlefield 4’s Commander feature more seamlessly into the gameplay, Battlefield 5 lets the leader of any squad call in unique and valuable resources for their team during multiplayer matches. Achieving team based objectives within your team of four, such as capturing objectives or defusing a bomb, will earn the squad with a currency called Resources.
These can then be spent by the squad leader to call in Reinforcements, which can be selected from the social wheel in-game. Leaders can deploy all sorts of helpful Reinforcements from this menu, from ammo filled supply drops to devastating missile drones that can decimate dozens of enemies at a time. So if you are the leader, make sure to issue orders to earn those Resources as quickly as possible, as the rewards for doing so will soon make themselves apparent.

This will automatically identify an enemy if there is one to spot, and place a marker denoting the enemy's type on the minimap of every friendly player. When there are no enemies to be spotted, the message "Enemy forces spotted" is stated instead, and a question mark appears where the icon denoting enemy type otherwise would.
It is also possible to manually set which unit the player is spotting by pressing the right mouse button, which brings up a small drop-down menu and several unit types to choose from. When there is in fact no enemy, an icon will appear on the minimap indicating the type of enemy specified by the player, and this icon will always face north. If there is an enemy but the player specifies a different type, the icon appearing on the minimap will indicate the actual type of the enemy present.
Battlefield 2142 introduces "3D Spotting", a more refined version of the spotting mechanic in previous games. Still activated with the Commo Rose, 3D spotting creates a small red diamond appears over the body of an enemy on the player's HUD, as well as a minimap marker, for a short time. This allows teammates to track spotted enemies that are not in their direct line of fire but are in their cone of vision. Sometimes, merely targeting an enemy will bring up the red diamond. Certain gadgets contribute to or make use of 3D spotting.

In Battlefield: Bad Company, spotting is present, but in an automatic nature. Whenever a player looks at or shoots at another player for a long period of time (or has traced a target with the Tracer Dart Gun), a blue message will appear in the top left corner of the HUD saying "Enemy soldier spotted", with the message changing if the spotter is looking at a vehicle or helicopter. The player character will also report the spotting audibly.
A small orange triangle will appear above the spotted player for a very short period of time. Any spot messages made by squad members will be shown as light blue on the HUD of members of that particular squad, while the message for each players' own spots are white.
This method of spotting is also used in Battlefield 1943.
The spotting mechanic featured in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the same "3D Spotting" as in 2142. A spotted enemy is marked by a bright red triangle above their head.
A spotted enemy who is subsequently killed by a teammate (prior to the expiration of the spot) leads to a "spot assist", incentivizing players to spot more. Spotting is performed with the Spot button, which by default is Q on PC, Select on PlayStation 3, and Back on Xbox 360.
The spotting in Battlefield Play4Free is similar to that of Battlefield Bad Company 2 Players can spot by pressing Q while looking at an enemy, or by selecting the spot option from the commo rose.
Spotting re-appears in Battlefield 3, and is very similar to that of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, by using Q on PC, pressing Back on Xbox 360 or Select on PlayStation 3 while aiming over an enemy.

Spots on vehicles persist for much longer, even through concealment. Vehicle users can unlock specializations that hinder spotting (such as Stealth, making it harder to spot unless firing). Since Battlefield 4, Smoke Grenades can partially or completely block spotting.
Returning from 2142 for PC players is the commo rose to issue orders and request medkits, ammo, and repair from appropriate teammates. Holding down the spotting key and moving the mouse allows voice prompts to be issued.
Added is a context-sensitive "quick command" using just the spotting key—if your character is injured, they can "spot" an allied medic (carrying a medkit) to give healing. The character will speak a voice prompt, and symbols will also appear representing players who can provide assistance and the requesting player. However, this can also alert nearby enemies of your presence. This also applies when 'spotting' a friendly Support for Ammo, an Engineer to fix your damaged vehicle or even asking a vehicle driver to stop for you to get in, if there's empty slots available.
Players with certain specializations or gadgets can use laser designation for other players with guided weaponry. A large diamond-and-dot icon indicates a lock; if the icon is surrounded with a square, a teammate is able to make use of the lock.
In Battlefield 4, an animation was added that shows the player's soldier pointing toward targets, with Battlefield Hardline and Battlefield 1 continuing this trend. On console, the spotting button has been shifted from Back to RB (Xbox 360), and Select to R1(PS3). Compass headings are added to voice prompts, significantly improving awareness.
In singleplayer, spotting is used to direct squad fire, allowing the player to flank.
While spotting mechanics in Battlefield 1 remain largely the same to previous entries, the Trench Periscope and the Sniper Decoy allow a more advanced form of spotting that draws an outline on the spotted target which persists even through cover.

In Battlefield 1, a new mechanic added to spotting is Medic Revive Intent, also commonly called "Medic Spotting". The mechanic first saw testing in the Community Test Environment and is added to game proper in the Spring 2017 update. The mechanic allows a Medic using the Medical Syringe to inform a dead player of their intent to revive them by spotting their dead icon. The dead player will get a sound notification from the spotting medic, and the spotting medic's name will be placed into a new list of Incoming Medics above their list of Nearby Medics on their killcam, notifying them of a medic intending to revive them.
In the Incursions mode of Battlefield 1 3D spotting was disabled, with players instead pointing out targets to teammates with static markers.

Players can continue spotting enemies while downed, potentially alerting squadmates to their assailant's position, or the approach of a threat further ahead. As in Battlefield 1, downed players can in turn be spotted by Medics, alerting the downed player of a potential revive.
As of a certain update, players are now alerted when they themselves have been spotted, with a yellow alert appearing over the minimap.
Spotting of vehicles is more difficult, as regular spotting no longer tracks a vehicle's position.
As of the Open Beta, Battlefield 2042 carries on many of the changes brought in Battlefield V. Players can ping a location of interest or the static location of an enemy. Introduced is the ability to cancel a ping by pressing Spot another time.
Double-pressing Spot now performs a "danger ping", with the player character announcing range and bearing to the enemy target. The ping remains stationary, unlike on detector gadgets or vehicle spotter positions that continue tracking their marked target.
Whether vehicle occupants can share spotting with each other (a long-standing shortcoming in the series) remains to be seen.
