Is streaming music ruining the music industry?
For people who play music- yes.For the public, no.
The music industry has been ruined by the fact that anyone can put out terrible music and be popular, and this goes for every genre as well.
Not true.Without legal and monetized streaming, the industry would be ruined. The decline of recorded music revenue really started with uncontrolled digital music and the rise of online piracy, with Napster in 1999 not today's Napster which is only a brand; the original Napster which was serving illegal files. Then there were thousands of sites distributing copyrighted music illegally remember Audiogalaxy? eMule and all P2P sites?, then Torrents, then mp3skull-likes, etc.
Short answer: Yes, very much.A lot of legal issues have been confused by it.I think the evolution of cheap home studios has hurt the industry.
There are a number of technological advances in the area of digital processing. The music has turned into something else.
It's almost impossible to hear human beings in the mix.Everything is very compressed. There aren't many humans in the mix anymore.
YMV
It has ruined our view of sound quality. The recordings are compressed so they can be streamed or downloaded. We went backwards in audio quality in favor of speed and efficiency after the CD's sounded great.
