આ એક એવો રોગ છે કે જે સ્વતંત્ર રોગના રૂપમાં પણ જોવા મળે છે અને કોઈ રોગના લક્ષણ રૂપે પણ જોવા મળતો હોય છે શ્વસનતંત્રનો આ એક અત્યંત બળવાન વ્યાધિ ગણી શકાય છે.

હાલના સમયમાં આ રોગ કોરોનાના લક્ષણ તરીકે પણ માનવામાં આવે છે પણ તેથી કાંઈ ગભરાઈ જવાની જરૂર નથી. આ રોગ જેટલો બળવાન છે તેટલાં જ સરળ ઉપાયોથી તે કાબૂમાં લાવી શકાય છે. ક્યારેક શરદી- મટી ગયા પછી તો ક્યારેક તેની સાથે જ ખાંસીની ભાઈબંધી જોવા મળે છે. આ ખાંસી કે ઉધરસ સૂકી અને કફવાળી એમ બંને રીતે હોઈ શકે છે અને શ્વસનતંત્રના અન્ય બીજા રોગો કે જેમાં ખાંસી એક મુખ્ય લક્ષણ હોય છે જેમાં ઇન્ફ્લુએન્ઝા, હુપીંગ કફ, ઓરી, ક્ષય ને ફેફસા તથા હૃદયના બધાં જ રોગોમાં ખાંસી હાજર જ હોય છે.

ઉધરસ શરૂ થતાં પહેલા દર્દીના ગળામાં બળતરા જેવું લાગે છે. ગળાની અંદર ખાતાપીતા કાંટાની જેમ ખૂંચે છે. રોગીનો અવાજ ભારે થવાની સાથોસાથ ગળામાં ખારાશ લાગે છે ક્યારેક હળવો તાવ પણ આવી જાય છે. દર્દીને સાધારણ ગભરામણ જેવું લાગે છે. શરીર સુસ્ત અને અશક્ત બને છે. કોઈ કામ કરવામાં મન લાગતું નથી. દર્દીને સતત આરામ કરવાની ઇચ્છા થાય છે. સતત ખાંસી આવવાથી છાતીમાં તોક્યારેક દર્દીઓને ખાંસી સાથે સાથે ઉલ્ટી  પણ થાય છે. કેટલાકને તો ખાંસીની સાથે ગળફા પણ પડે છે. કેટલાક દર્દીને માત્ર સૂકી ખાંસી જ હોય છે આ ખાંસીનો શિયાળામાં વધુ પ્રકોપ જોવા મળે છે. સામાન્ય રીતે ખાંસીનો પ્રકોપ રાત્રે વધી જાય છે જ્યારે કેટલાક દર્દીને ખાંસીનો પ્રકોપ થવાનો કોઈ નિશ્ચિત સમય હોતો નથી.

આયુર્વેદ મતાનુસાર જ્યારે કફ ફેફસામાં ભરાઈ જાય છે પોતાની મેળે નીકળી શકતો નથી ત્યારે કુદરત પોતે જ શરીરમાં ખાંસી પેદા કરી તે કફને બહાર કાઢવા પ્રયત્ન કરે છે.

* ખાંસી- ઉધરસના કારણો :

- પ્રદૂષિત વાતાવરણની સ્થિતિમાં ધુમાડો, હવા-પાણી અને માટી- ધૂળ વગેરે વ્યક્તિની શ્વસન નળીમાં દાખલ થઈને ખાંસી પેદા કરે છે.

- બહુ જ ઠંડા, ચીકણા, તીખા, ચટપટા મસાલાદાર ભારે ખોરાકના અતિ સેવનથી કેળા, દહી, વાસી ખોરાક વધારે લેવાથી ખાંસીના ઉપદ્રવનો ભોગ બની જવાય છે. નશીલા પદાર્થોમાં ધૂમ્રપાન, શરાબ, સિગરેટ, અફીણ, ગાંજો વગેરે સેવન કરનાર વ્યક્તિ ખાંસીનો શિકાર અચૂક બને છે. ક્યારેક ઋતુ પરિવર્તન સમયે થનાર એલર્જી, ઉધરસ પણ જોવા મળે છે. જેને આયુર્વેદિક સરળ સારવાર દ્વારા મટાડી શકાય છે.

(૧) દૂધમાં હળદર નાખીને ઉકાળીને પીવું જેથી ખાંસીમાં રાહત થાય છે.

(૨) ગંઠોડાનું ચૂર્ણ દૂધમાં નાખીને ઉકાળો પીવાથી ખાંસીમાં રાહત થાય છે.

(૩) એલર્જીક ઉધરસમાં બૃહત હરિદ્રાખંડ એક- એક ચમચી બે વખત લેવું.

(૪) અરડૂસી અને તુલસીના પાનનો રસ મધ સાથે પીવાથી ઉધરસમાં આરામ મળે છે.

(૫) બહેડાની ગોળી, ચંદ્રામૃત રસ, સુતશેખર રસ, ભાગોતર વટી, મહાલક્ષ્મીવિલાસ રસ, પ્રવાલપિષ્ટી ડૉક્ટરની સલાહ મુજબ લઈને સેવન કરવાથી સત્વરે ફાયદો થાય છે.

(૬) જેઠીમધ અને બહેડા પાવડર સરખા ભાગે મેળવીને એક ચમચી પાવડર મધ સાથે લેવાથી ફાયદો થાય છે.

(૭) સૂકી ખાંસીમાં દશમૂળ કવાથને પાણી સાથે આપવાથી ફાયદો થાય છે.

(૮) લવિંગાદિવટી, એલાદીવટી અને ખદિરાદીવટી આમાંથી કોઈ એકનું વૈદકીય સલાહ મુજબ સેવન કરવાથી ઉધરસનો વેગ ઓછો થાય છે.
