The game mechanics and roles of some characters are different since it was created at the beginning of the franchise.

It has a simple game system.

The game has some problems.

The Password system shows that there are a lot of cards that can only be exchanged for 999,999 Stars, as some are not even offered after winning in Duels. It's almost impossible to get that many Stars since one to five are earned per Duel.

The original version of the PocketStation peripheral made it easier to get these cards. This form was completely eliminated when the compatibility for outside the Japanese territory was eliminated.

A rating is obtained when a Duel ends with the player winning.

There are two groups. The better the rating is in POW, the better the monsters will be.

The same applies to Spells and Traps. The game doesn't give a hint of how the system works. A POW rating is earned by using a great offense, while a TEC rating is earned by using a large amount of Spells and Traps or winning when the opponent runs out of cards in their Deck. A common player could play without ever getting a TEC S, the best TEC rank, and many POW S, which is the best POW rank.

It is easy to know the characteristics of the cards the opponents use, such as the first Guardian Star and the ability to summon monsters with 3000 ATK.

If it coincides with a player's monster with the same or lower offensive parameters, it will be put in Defense position, which can be used by the player on his next turn.

The player could summon the "Millennium Shield" (0 ATK/3000 DEF) as a line of defense against the "Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon", which had 2800 ATK and 2200 DEF. The player can use cards with less offensive power to defeat the opponent if they set the dragon in defense position.

Even if they could be used for a last hit, he will not use them to attack.

Since the player is never suggested which cards each summon requires, Ritual monsters are difficult to summon, but performing such Rituals involves keeping very weak monsters on the field until they can be utilized.

There are several characters, such as Heishin, Nitemare or Seto, who are able to anticipate plays, being able to know what cards the player is using. The player can determine if the opponent has Set Traps or Spells by looking at the color of the card after being Set.

By following an alternative line typical of this game, the characters and their role in the story are slightly different in some cases and completely different in others. When the game was released, Atem was still considered the Pharaoh, but the player assumes the role of him. The player can give the prince any name he wants.

The story begins in Ancient Egypt, with the prince of the dynasty (Atem), who often spends his time on the Duel Field playing against other villagers and his two friends, Jono and Teana.

Atem escaped from his tutor and advisor and went to the Duel Field to meet Teana and some other villagers. Teana tells him about a festival happening in the Town Square and they decide to go see it.

Teana comments that the ceremonies are starting to look more "dark" if it is the work of the "hateful" high wizard Heishin, who leads an independent group of wizards.
