Sandton is an affluent suburb and business centre in Johannesburg.
It is home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (the largest in Africa and the twelfth largest in the world), a number of large financial institutions (including local head offices for some foreign banks) and the largest shopping centre in South Africa.
From O.R. Tambo International Airport, after you exit the airport, follow R24 Johannesburg signs and the R24 to the Gillooly's Interchange, from here follow the N3 North towards Pretoria, take exit 124 (Sandton/M60 Marlboro Drive) turning left into Marlboro Drive, follow Marlboro Drive until the T-junction with Katherine Street, turn left into Katherine Street, and follow Katherine Street into Sandton.
From the M1, take exit 23 (Sandton/M40 Grayston Drive) or exit 26 (Sandton/M60 Marlboro Dr), and follow Marlboro Drive west until the T junction with Katherine Street (400 m), and turn left at Katherine Street into Sandton. From the N1, take exit 100 (Sandton/M9 Rivonia Road) and follow Rivonia Road south towards Sandton or exit 95 (Sandton/R511 William Nicol Drive) and follow south until it intersects with Sandton Drive, where you turn left. Rush hour traffic during the week can make getting into and out of Sandton a painfully slow business; you will be wise to avoid 7AM-9AM and 4PM-7PM.
Car hire is available from Pace Car Rental in Marlboro.
The Gautrain is now operational
Taxis can be found at entrance 12 to Sandton City. Metered cabs can also be hired by calling Safecab on +27 861 66-55-66 or Sandton Taxi Cabs on +2711 039 4402. It is illegal for metered taxis to be hailed as is seen in many other cities (e.g. in New York City). Passengers may catch taxis only if booked in advance(in person or by telephone), the only exception being in demarcated metered taxi zones.
Several main Metrobus routes serve the Sandton area, running regularly during the day in 30 min to 60 min intervals, as well as in the early evening. The 5C also runs regularly on weekends, including the normal early evening service. The 5C runs along Oxford Road and connects many important tourist attractions, including Sandton City, The Zone@Rosebank, and The Mall of Rosebank. Contact Metrobus on +27 11 375-5555 (Ext. 6) for more information on routes and timetables Metrobus is by far one of the safest and cheapest methods of getting around Sandton, and the City of Johannesburg. It must be noted, however, that Metrobus is not an alternative to private (hired) transport.
Nelson Mandela Square at Sandton City offers a number of restaurants to choose from, as well as a food court with fast food outlets.
The Greater Sandton areas has many modern excellent restaurants.
For cheap accommodation, you need to go to look in the other areas.
Cheap Wi-Fi is available in many locations throughout Sandton:

In the simplest terms, wastewater is any water that has been polluted by humans. This includes water contaminated as a result of:
As you would expect, wastewater is almost entirely water. The remaining portion — roughly 0.1% — contains organic matter, inorganic compounds, nutrients, and microorganisms that need to be explored in more detail.
Organic matter in wastewater includes proteins, carbohydrates, fats, oils, greases, and synthetic compounds found in certain detergents.
Without proper treatment, organic matter enters lakes and rivers and becomes a food source for the microorganisms that live there. The problem is that these tiny creatures pull dissolved oxygen from water when they break down pollutants. The more pollutants there are in the water, the greater their demand for oxygen.
This process spins out of control in lakes and rivers with high concentrations of organic matter. In these watercourses, oxygen levels fall so low that animals like fish, frogs, and turtles suffocate and die.
Inorganics in wastewater include compounds with copper, lead, magnesium, nickel, potassium, sodium, or zinc. In many cases, these harmful substances are the byproducts of commercial and industrial activities.
Inorganics do not break down easily. If they enter lakes or rivers via untreated wastewater, they remain there. As their concentrations increase over time, the water quality becomes a hazard for humans and animals alike.
Nutrients in wastewater include nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. These often come from human waste and cleaning products like laundry detergent and dishwasher soap.
It is no secret that nitrogen and phosphorus are common ingredients in fertilizers. They work wonders when we want to make plants grow and reproduce. But this advantage becomes a serious threat if we allow untreated and nutrient-rich wastewater to enter lakes and rivers.
High concentrations of nitrogen or phosphorus can lead to "dead zones" in watercourses. The process goes like this:
Nitrogen in untreated wastewater can cause another problem. If nitrate (a nitrogen compound) pollutes our drinking water, it can reduce our blood's ability to transport oxygen. For infants, this can lead to what is commonly known as blue baby syndrome. In extreme cases, the condition is fatal.
Some microorganisms in wastewater are helpful because they break down organic matter that would otherwise pollute the environment.
Pathogens in untreated wastewater are a different story. These bacteria, parasites, and viruses can contaminate clean water sources. If they do, they undermine human health by causing serious and sometimes deadly illnesses.
In Canada, perhaps the best-known example took place in Walkerton, Ontario. In May 2000, the town's drinking water supply was tainted with E. coli bacteria after municipal wastewater was improperly treated. More than 2,300 residents became ill and seven people died.
A closer look at wastewater makes it easy to see why we must treat it before it is released back into the environment.
Think of your on-site wastewater treatment plant as a water conservation tool. By removing suspended solids and other pollutants, your system prevents groundwater and water pollution that could lead to:
