In the sixth chapter I am going to tell you how one of the tools that you have asked me about the most works, both in private and on the YouTube channel. We are going to learn how to make our pictures sharper.
One of the questions that is repeated over and over again is how to focus in Lightroom to have photographs with a correct level of sharpness, without creating a lot of noise and depending on the output that we are going to give. This course will show you everything you need to know about how to focus our files in the program.
And it is that, contrary to what many of you think, Lightroom has the focus tab, a tremendously powerful tool that will help us focus the photographs during post-processing, in an even more useful way than what we can do in Adobe Photoshop (except that we combine the use of more advanced techniques, such as focusing by frequency separation or luminosity masks), so I think it is mandatory that before continuing with the local tools, we learn how we can focus our photos in lightroom in an easy and fast way.
It does a very simple job, focusing the files during post-processing, but what seems so easy it does very well, since it has several options that allow you to achieve and adjust the focus of the photographs to perfect.
It's completely clear, and you don't have to be an expert photographer to see it, that sharp and well-focused images have a positive effect on the viewer. It is because of this that many of you ask me how to focus in lightroom, and it is also because of the fact that many of you have some focus problems, which makes you discard the focus tool in lightroom.
These two problems usually appear when we do not understand how to use the focus in Lightroom correctly, so throughout this post we are going to learn how to focus our photographs in Lightroom in the easiest way, but above all in the way in which we are going to avoid the appearance of the side effects that we have seen.
To focus our files in lightroom, we need to go to the development module and the detail tab.
The sharpness of our images can be controlled through the two tools included in this tab, the focus and noise reduction.
We will dedicate an entry to each of the tools since they are so decisive in controlling sharpness. We are going to focus on the upper part of the Focus area in the first entry.
I have already told you that the sharpen tool is very powerful. It is similar to the "sharp mask" filter in the way that it improved, but for those of you who are not familiar with it, it is.
Why did it improve? It allows us to adjust the amount, the area where we are going to apply the focus and the radius.
The adjustments that we make are not destructive as we can apply them over and over again, as you know, as we can save the adjustments in a database. If you make a mistake or want to go back to the original image, it's easy to do.
This tool will allow us to save preset adjustments that we can apply when we import our photographs. This capacity is useful for all of you who work with thousands of photographs and want to apply a similar approach.
The interface of the sharpening tool is very simple.
We only have a small browser and four small buttons. We need to focus our attention on the lightroom.
It's a thumbnail that can be used to see the 100% sharpening effect we're applying in Lightroom. You can scroll through the image to focus on the areas that interest you the most, you can even use the pin that appears in the upper left corner to choose the area of the image that we want to show. To do this, you have to click on the pin, and then on the left image.
I don't think this screen is useful since it's small and doesn't allow me to see what I'm doing.
When I want to see the effect of my sharpening in lightroom, I put my image directly at 100% so I can see the areas that interest me more effectively. If we do it at screen size, we will always overfocus the photographs, so I recommend that you always check the effects of the focus with a 100% increase in your photographs.
The most important is the one in lightroom.
It is, to call it something else, the master sliders, the one that will control how much focus we apply to our photos. A value of zero means that we are not going to focus our photo, and a value of high means that we are increasing the focus in the photos.
How much focus is possible?
The Amount and ALT button combination is shown below.
How far do I want to focus?
The focus area around the edges is going to be indicated by this. The value of 1 px indicates that one pixel will be extended around each edge. If we increase the radius value to a maximum of 3, we are telling the studio to extend the sharpening effect up to a distance of 3px from the edges. If we combine it with a high amount of focus, we will be able to make focus halos.
The combination of Radio and the ALT button is shown below.
What is "focusable"?
It's similar to a fine adjustment of the radius, although the latter tells us how far we want to expand the effect of the sharpening, the detail slider will indicate what type of edges should be considered. If we use very low values, it will only consider the most obvious edges, while if we go to high values, it will consider any edge as such.
For example, if we are focusing on an image with a bird and we select a very low detail value, only the thickest feathers, the beak, the eye, etc. will be focused, but if we select a maximum detail, we will be telling lightroom that treat almost any edge in the image as edges (and thus sharpen), and it will sharpen all the feathers!!! The appearance of adverse effects is caused by high values of quantity and radius, in this case the texturing of the image.
There is a combination of the detail and the button.
Where can we translate the approach?
The most noticeable effect when focusing in lightroom is the slider that causes the Ouh yeah.
The mask will tell us which areas we want to focus on and which areas we want to protect. It's the same as what we do when we use a mask.
We will protect the smooth areas of the photograph, in which we normally do not want to focus, and we will focus on the edges. The focus on the clear edges will always be prioritized over the effects of the three sliders.
The focus mask is a useful trick that we can tell you about in the lightroom.
The focus module of lightroom has the option of using the ALT/OPTION button.
I told you at the time that the option on Mac is very useful in almost any tab in which we are working in the developer module. It's a good idea to press the ALT button if you want to see if something happens.
The focus in lightroom can be achieved with the combination of the sliders and the ALT.
The image is converted to black and white.
We will be able to see the effect of focus on photography objectively. The color combination can give a misleading image due to contrast. By converting the photograph to black and white, we will be able to see if the focus is a lot or a little.
A high pass on an image is used to show us the extent of the focus.
You will see that if you choose a certain radius, you will have a greater or lesser extension of the focus.
Similar to what happens when the radius is set. Depending on the level of detail that we are selecting, we will be able to see what type of edges we will focus on.
If the purpose of the Alt button is debatable, where this trick is combined with the focus mask, then it is a good idea. The black areas will be limiting the effect and the white ones will be applying it in this example.
By increasing the value of the mask, we will be saying that we want to focus in lightroom in a more or lessselective way.
