Boat length should be a simple matter, shouldn’t it? A moment with a tape measure should give it to within an inch or two. But it’s never been as simple as that as we all know. Firstly there is simple confusion between LOS, LE, LOA and LOD. Then there is the LWL/LOA debate. So, starting with the greatest and working our way down, here are a few thoughts on the maze of boat length!

LOS: length over spars. This is length from the tip of the outermost protruding spars at the forward and aft ends of your craft. In real terms, it means including the bowsprit, but it can also include a bumpkin or even boom overhang. It’s also known as Length Extreme or LE, and nobody except charter firms, show-offs, or marina managers take this length seriously, so we’ll move swiftly on.

LOA: length overall. This is the big one. First of all, there are two definitions, one old and one new. The old definition, and the one used by Lloyd’s is length overall EXCLUDING protruding spars. The new definition is more literal (the modern disease) and includes the spars.

LOD: length on deck. These days, it serves as another way of expressing what we used to call LOA. Technically, the deck is often (though not always) shorter than the entire boat, but it’s shorthand to avoid confusion and usually means the boat without the spar overhang.

LPB: length between perpendiculars. This outmoded abbreviation refers to the length of the boat between the foremost and aftermost perpendicular structural members (ie ribs).
