Home education is the process of academic training of boys and girls exclusively within the family home in slightly larger circles or in nature itself. It is carried out outside of public and private institutions, and is the only form of intellectual instruction.

There are various reasons for home education, but all want to develop a de-institutionalized way of learning.

Some families make this choice for religious reasons ​, while others do so because they do not like the schools in their local area or because they consider the institutional effect of the school in general negative, especially from the perspective that the educational system it does not educate, but rather trains and converts people into intelligent workers or slaves, useful to the system as labor. It is an alternative for families living in isolated rural areas who are unable to take their children to the formal education system.

Home education is a legal option in many countries for people who want to educate their descendants in a different setting than in schools.

It is based on the idea that any child can learn and discover their potential through nature, play and rehearsal, not by repetition, and that is what standard schools offer. Integration into society is done in a more natural way if you live in it.

It is carried out, if the family wishes, through the supervision of specialized people and, contrary to what many people believe, the self-taught student (who learns on their own) manages to obtain the same, and even better, academic results. and formative than the students of the traditional model.

It is based on the principle of recognizing the existing curriculum in schools and colleges as the most appropriate to be taught and learned by children, considering its monitoring and achievement as an important part of the child's social development

Parents act as education agents between the school and their children, being the ones who direct them throughout the teaching-learning process.

It is possible for compulsory education at home to be integrated into school. There are various instances of community or group education.

Most of the families that have established education in their homes have opted for intermediate methodologies to those described, adopting various degrees of rigidity in the vertical transmission of knowledge from natural laws or currents, some curricular mesh, or their own, giving varying degrees of freedom in learning to their children.

The oldest compulsory education began in the West in the late 17th and early 18th centuries in the German states of Gotha, Heidelheim, Calemberg, and particularly Prussia. Ivan Illich's Deschooling Society, 1970, and Harold Bennet's No More Public School, 1972, were books that challenged the premises and efficacy of compulsory education in the early 1970s.

John Caldwell Holt wrote in 1976 Instead of Education: Ways to Help People Do Things Better. Holt was contacted by families across the United States who had decided to home school their children. Growing Without Schooling was published by Holt.

Almost simultaneously, in the second half of the 1970s, educators Ray and Dorothy Moore began to document and publish the results of their research on educational optimization in children, the main finding of which was that children should not enter the formal educational system until they are at least ten years old, in order to obtain optimal educational and social results. Better Late Than Early, 1975 and Home Grown Kids, 1984 were books that the Moores published that advocated for the system.

The situation in Spain is complex because the law does not explicitly prohibit home education, despite the fact that education must be exercised in approved centers until the age of 16.

International certifications are accredited through various forms of legalization, and thus students can access higher education in various countries, provided that the students have enrolled in validated academies and that they comply with the legal minimums of the respective country that enables this type of education and from which the certifications of the studies are issued.

The "Homeschooling Platforms" may admit face-to-face meetings that favor the integration of parents as teachers, and the socialization of children with their peers, even if they are virtual.

"Umbrella Academy" is a science fiction series that was produced by the internet service provider, and is about personalized home education for gifted children who develop their abilities.

Karl M. Bunday cites the New Zealand television show "Sixty Minutes" (no relation to the American show of the same name) as a reference to there being 7,000 home-schooled school-age children in 1996. Philip Strange of the Australian Home Education Association Inc. speaks of "5,274 registered homeschooled students from 3,001 families" in 1998 according to figures from the New Zealand Ministry of Education.
