Home education is the process of academic training of boys and girls exclusively within the family home in slightly larger circles or in nature itself. It is carried out outside of public and private institutions, and is the only form of intellectual instruction.
There are various reasons for home education, but all want to develop a de-institutionalized way of learning.
Some families make this choice for religious reasons , while others do so because they do not like the schools in their local area or because they consider the institutional effect of the school in general negative, especially from the perspective that the educational system it does not educate, but rather trains and converts people into intelligent workers or slaves, useful to the system as labor. Ivan Illich's Deschooling Society, 1970, and Harold Bennet's No More Public School, 1972, were books that challenged the premises and efficacy of compulsory education in the early 1970s.
John Caldwell Holt wrote in 1976 Instead of Education: Ways to Help People Do Things Better. Holt was contacted by families across the United States who had decided to home school their children. Growing Without Schooling was published by Holt.
Almost simultaneously, in the second half of the 1970s, educators Ray and Dorothy Moore began to document and publish the results of their research on educational optimization in children, the main finding of which was that children should not enter the formal educational system until they are at least ten years old, in order to obtain optimal educational and social results. Better Late Than Early, 1975 and Home Grown Kids, 1984 were books that the Moores published that advocated for the system.
