Answer
crontab is a program that manages personal crontab files for individual users. Every user can have a personal crontab file, but not every user can use it to manipulate the system.
cron statements are used to manage personal crontab files.Launching a graphical program with cronControlling access to the crontab command.
A cron instruction consists of two parts, the execution time and the command to be executed. The command can be any command that a text shell can interpret, and only time needs to be fully explained.
We can either use a special string or a time expression. Each of the parameters is separated by a space in the time expression.
The minute hour day of a month or a week.
The values are valid for each field.
Between 0 and 7 days a week, between 0 and 23 days a month. 0 and 7 are the same as Sunday.
The first three letters of the name of the month and of the days can be used in upper or lower case. Therefore, the valid values for the days of the week are: Mon (Monday), Tue (Tuesday), Wed (Wednesday), Thu (Thursday), Fri (Friday), Sat (Saturday), Sun (Sunday); and valid values for months are: Jan (January), Feb (February), Mar (March), Apr (April), May (May), Jun (June), Jul (July), Aug (August), Sep (September), Oct (October), Nov (November), Dec (December).
A range of numbers, separated by a hyphen, can be used to represent every hour from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Each and every possible value is true, as if we had specified a range from the first to the last valid value of that field. If we use the wildcard character in the minutes place, it would execute the cron statement every minute, if we use it in the hour field, we would run the command every hour, provided that the rest of the time matches, for example, if we specify 10 in the hour , but we add an asterisk in the minute field, it would run the instruction every minute between 10:00 am and 10:59 am. The command would be executed every day of the specified month if we added an asterisk to the day.
We can use a list of numbers separated by a letter, for example, 3,5,7,11 in the month field would represent March, May, July and November.
We can use step values, these are used in conjunction with ranges, as well as the wildcard character *, and specify numbers to skip, for example, */2 in the month value would represent 2,4,6,8,10, 12. If there is a rest, the number is skipped.
In the example, any odd minute would be skipped and the command would be executed every single minute.
The time at which the tasks are done depends on the time of the day.
We can use the special strings instead of the fields.
@reboot - Run the command when the computer is started@yearly or @annually - Run the command once a year (0 0 1 1 *)@monthly - Run the command once a month (0 0 1 * *)@weekly - Run the command once a week (0 0 * * 0)@daily or @midnight- Run the command daily (0 0 * * *)@hourly - Run the command every hour (0 * * * *)
Every Monday at 3:00am, there are command parameters.
Every 5 minutes in December.
At 10:00 am, 2 pm and 6 pm on July 23.
On Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:45 pm.
Every Saturday in April:0
Every 12 hours.
The first Wednesday of every month is 0 0 1-7.
Every user on the system can have a personal crontab file, but not every user can use crontab to install and edit their personal crontab file; if the user does not have access to the crontab, only the system administrator can create it for him or her. One should allow the crontab command to handle personal crontab files, instead of manually editing them, since they are stored in /var/spool/cron/crontabs.
crontab invokes a text editor of our choice in order to write our instructions for cron, and it checks the integrity of the file and installs it once we finish editing it. crontab will give us an error message if we make a mistake and will ask if we want to try again.
Setting the EDITOR environment variable is what we need to set the text editor. I'm going to set the text editor as the preferred one, but you can use a different one, I personally use the Vim text editor.
If you are working in a graphical environment, you can set up a graphical text editor like gedit or kate.
exportPUBLISHER
You can use the environment variable to check it.
echo the name of the author
If you want to set this editor as the default you need to add the export command to.bashrc in your home folder.
You can use this method to do this.
echo "export EDITOR"
Select-editor is a new command that can be used to manage the default text editor. The screen we are presented with when we run select-editor is similar to this.
The second option is available in the menu.
The selection of editor is ignored if the EDITOR environment variable is set.
We can use the command to create a personal crontab file once we choose our text editor.
crontab
This will open the editor that was selected.
If the file does not exist, crontab will create a new file, this new file might already have comments, you can add as many instructions as you want. The crontab file is a personal one so you don't need to specify a time for the command to execute.
You can review the contents of your crontab file at any time.
crontab
To remove your personal crontab file, you need to do it.
crontab -r
Optionally to using crontab -e, you can create a file with instructions for cron and install this new file, this will replace your current crontab file located in /var/spool/cron/crontabs/ with the contents of your selected file, to do this you need to use:
crontab file with instructions forcron
If you have root privileges, you can use crontab with the -u switch to review and remove other users' crontab files.
crontab -u john
There is a global crontab file located in /etc/crontab, this file has the particularities that it does not need to be installed with the crontab command, once it is edited the changes are automatically taken into account; and that it has an extra field for the user on whose behalf the command is to be executed, making the command run with that user's privileges. There is a field between the two.
To open this file in our favorite text editor, we need root privileges to do so.
Go to the gedit/etc/crontab
