Microsoft's cloud storage solution is called Azure StorSimple. An extension to the on-premises solution and automatic data tiering across on-premises storage and cloud storage is how StorSimple addresses the complexity of exponential data growth.
This article describes the best practices for integrating NetBackup and StorSimple. Recommendations are given on how to integrate NetBackup with StorSimple
We refer to Veritas best practices, backup architects, and administrators on how to set up NetBackup to meet individual backup requirements.
This article is not a detailed setup or installation guide, although both setup steps and key concepts are shown. The basic infrastructure and components are expected to be ready to support the concepts described.
The information in this article will be useful for backup administrators, storage administrators, and storage architects with knowledge of storage, Windows server 2012 R2, and cloud services.
It is a good choice for a backup destination.
A thorough assessment of the solution's storage performance, SLAs, rate of change, and capacity growth needs are critical to its success. The main idea is that by introducing a cloud tier, access times and performance in the cloud play a critical role in the ability to do its job.
Storage for applications that run on active data is provided by the StorSimple. The active dataset is stored in the on-premises layers, while the remaining non-active or archived dataset is in the cloud. The model is shown in the illustration. The green line shows the data stored at the local levels of the device.
The red line shows the amount of data stored in the solution. The space between the green line and red curve is the total amount of data in the cloud.
The levels are simple.
With this architecture in mind, it's easy to see why StorSimple is a good backup destination. You can use it.
The on-premises solution integrates with Microsoft Azure and provides access to local and cloud storage.
The local device has Serial Attached SCSI and Solid State Devices, which are auto-tiering between them.
Data can be accessed on- premises across the SAS and SSD tiers. Data can be moved to Azure Storage.
The following advantages are offered by StorSimple.
The primary and secondary backup destination are both deployment scenarios that are fundamentally a raw block storage device.
All compression and deduplication is performed by StorSimple. Data can be sent and retrieved from the cloud to the application and file system.
For more information on cloud storage, see the StorSimple 8000 Series.
The technical specifications for the StorSimple 8000 Series can be found here.
The tables show the relationship between the device model and the architecture.
Local and cloud storage can be accessed via the StorSimple capabilities.
Storage size is assumed to not have deduplication and compression.
There are simple backups for primary and secondary.
The only repository for backups is presented to the backup application by the volumes.
The architecture of a solution where all backups use the same tiered volumes is shown in the illustration.
In this scenario, the StorSimple volumes are used for long-term retention.
The architecture depicted in the following illustration has initial backups and restores for a high- performance volume. On a set schedule, the backups are taken and archived on a tiered volume.
Retention policy capacity and performance requirements need to be handled by the right size of your high- performance volume.
Three steps are needed to implement this solution.
The following sections detail the steps.
Since it's an integrated solution with the cloud, it requires an active connection. This connection is used for operations such as cloud snapshots, data management, and metadata transfer, as well as tiering older data with less access in Azure cloud storage
It is recommended that you follow the network best practices.
For detailed instructions on how to deploy the local device, see Deploy the local device.
The NetBackup 7.7.x documentation has a step-by-step implementation guide.
Some examples are shown in this section.
The following recommendations and examples show how to implement. This implementation may not apply to your requirements.
Follow these instructions to set up the host backup server storage.
The instructions are in the following sections
The NetBackup documentation can be found at www.veritas.com and contains best practices for implementing these requirements.
Grandfather, Father, and Son is a backup retention policy. A daily incremental backup is performed in a policy.
One volume contains the weekly, monthly, and yearly full backups; the other five volumes store daily incremental backups.
The following example uses a rotation.
The following facts are assumed.
The tiered volume for the monthly and yearly backups should be created based on the assumptions. Each of the daily incremental backups can be created with a 5 TiB StorSimple tiered volume.
The number of copies that must be retained to meet the requirements of the backup policies is called the GFS multiplier.
The illustration shows the assignment of a volume to a backup job.
All weekly backups are assigned to the Saturday Full disk, and all incremental backups are assigned to the Monday-Friday Incremental disks. All backups and restores are made from a tiered volume.
A rotation schedule for four weeks, monthly, and yearly can be found below.
The following sequence assumes NetBackup is configured according to the NetBackup Agent guide.

Grab a plastic grocery bag and fill it with anything that has heft, like canned food and bags of rice. Pack the items in tightly to avoid shifting around. When you reach the size and weight you want (confirm with a household scale), tie the bag tightly, then place the filled bag inside another bag.
