Microsoft's cloud storage solution is called Azure StorSimple. An extension to the on-premises solution and automatic data tiering across on-premises storage and cloud storage is how StorSimple addresses the complexity of exponential data growth.

A thorough assessment of the solution's storage performance, SLAs, rate of change, and capacity growth needs are critical to its success. The main idea is that by introducing a cloud tier, access times and performance in the cloud play a critical role in the ability to do its job.

Storage for applications that run on active data is provided by the StorSimple. The active dataset is stored in the on-premises layers, while the remaining non-active or archived dataset is in the cloud. The model is shown in the illustration. The green line shows the data stored at the local levels of the device.
