Getting all of the decor and art hung in your home can feel like a daunting task. Do you have a whiteboard you want to hang up but don't want to use nails? Is this possible? Luckily for you, we've done plenty of research and have a few ideas to share. Let's get into it below.
If you want to hang a whiteboard without nails, make sure you find a super sticky product. Generally, you'll want to use industrial strength velcro or Command strips to do this, as they hold weight pretty well.
From there, make sure to apply your product around the border of your whiteboard, so it won't end up falling off the wall.
As we begin, we will cover all things whiteboards and show you how to hang one without using nails. Whether you rent or just don't want holes in your walls, we're here to offer some help. With that said, let's dive right into this topic!
Yes! You can certainly skip using nails to hang a whiteboard. Industrial strength velcro or Command strips tend to be the best options, so we recommend either of the two.
Especially if you have a larger-sized board, it's imperative to find an adhesive product that can hold the weight. Generally, a whiteboard won't weigh more than a few pounds, so most extra-strength adhesive products will be sufficient.
However, you want to be careful with how you hang a whiteboard. If you don't secure it correctly, there's a greater chance it will slide down or even fall off the wall entirely.
Again, we recommend running the velcro/adhesive strips along the border of your whiteboard, as this will ensure the weight is distributed equally.
If you only put a large piece of adhesive on the back of the board, it's more likely to fall after a few months, so placement is crucial.
Hanging a whiteboard won't be too difficult for those wanting to go nail-free. To start:
Depending on the product you use, you only want to peel off one side of the adhesive tape. The other side will be attached to the wall, so wait to peel until it's time to hang.
On the other hand, velcro strips will require you to place one side on the wall and the other on your whiteboard, which is slightly different from using a double-sided tape or Command strip.
For those torn between velcro or Command strips for their project, this comes down to weight and preference. Most importantly, if your whiteboard doesn't weigh more than three or four pounds, we think velcro will be fine.
A Command strip may be the best option if you have a bigger whiteboard that weighs more than five pounds. Most adhesive products will list their specific weight limit, so make sure to check that beforehand.
Furthermore, Command strips tend to come off the wall easier when you need to remove them, so that may be enough for you to get them. However, either should hold out well.
These heavy-duty velcro strips can hold up to ten pounds, measure 4x2 inches, are good for indoor/outdoor use, and come in a pack of eight.

This pack of Command strips holds up to 16 pounds, includes 14 pairs, are easy to open, is white, and promises a clean removal from your walls.

If your whiteboard has hooks and you want to use them, you can certainly try this. Like using a nail, putting a Command hook onto the wall and attaching it to the small hooks on the back of your board is an easy way to hang it.
However, if your Command hooks are too big or not big enough, they may not fit into the hooks on the back of your whiteboard. For this reason, many people choose to stick with classic strips of velcro.
Additionally, using hooks to hang a whiteboard will make it hang off the wall a bit. Think of how a painting looks in a high-end gallery, often protruding an inch or so from the wall.
Again, this isn't necessarily a "bad" thing, so if you don't want to use strips or velcro and don't mind your whiteboard being off the wall a tad, we think it is a good option.
In general, you can expect to have an adhesive product stick to your walls for months, if not years. Depending on the product you use, you could see it last for 1-2 years before needing replacement.
For example, the less humid it is in a house, the better an adhesive will stay on any given surface. So if you're in the desert, your Command strip could stay on for 12 plus months, while someone in Florida may need to replace their strip twice a year.
Again, that's not to say this is always the case, but humidity/moisture is an adhesive's worst enemy. If your wall gets wet regularly, this can shorten the lifespan of your product.
Furthermore, using an adhesive product that doesn't hold the weight of your whiteboard can also affect how long it stays in place. Hence why, finding one with the correct weight threshold is so important.
Yes, an adhesive should be able to stick to painted walls. Figuring that the paint you have isn't too glossy, you shouldn't run into the adhesive tape sliding or having trouble remaining on the surface.
Generally, matte, eggshell, and even satin wall paints provide a grip for adhesive, which can help your items stay hung for longer. Wall texture plays a significant role in the adhesive's ability to grip.
For example, a super textured wall or surface may not hold a whiteboard as well as a flat one will. That is because your tape doesn't have as many grooves to fit into, ultimately sticking to the wall better.
Adding to that, if your wall is textured and has high gloss paint, you may need to wipe it down before sticking anything to it. Dirt and oil can make a painted wall too difficult for adhesive products to work on, so always clean them before hanging.
If you're having trouble getting your Command or velcro strips to stay on the wall, this could be because your surface isn't clean. As we covered above, dirt, oil, and any other residue on a wall can make it harder for an adhesive product to work.
To fix this issue, grab a clean cloth and soak it in warm soapy water. Next, wipe the wall in circular motions, removing anything left behind.
After that, allow the wall to completely dry for a few hours before applying your adhesive. If you don't wait long enough, your strips won't stick to the wall and could even damage the paint.
It's better to wait longer than try and stick something to a damp surface, so you may want to let your wall dry overnight to be 100% sure.
No, we wouldn't say using a nail to hang a whiteboard is always the better option. Especially for people renting their homes, creating holes in the wall can mean getting charged a fee/fine later.
Furthermore, using nails to hang a whiteboard can sometimes be pointless. Why not stick a heavy-duty strip to the wall instead and save the headache?
As we covered, using industrial-strength velcro or even Command strips or hooks will usually do the trick. Choosing these alternatives can also save you from having to patch and paint your walls, which doesn't always completely hide the previous nail marks.
Whether you need to hang a whiteboard for homeschooling or to keep track of weekly events, knowing how to do this without nails is always good. You can use heavy-duty Velcro or Command strips to hang a whiteboard on your wall from what we found.
Although nails tend to be the default for hanging wall art/decor, switching to a mess-free adhesive can save you time and money long term. This is especially true for those renting, as many landlords will charge you a fee for creating holes in the wall.
Regardless, find an adhesive with a high enough weight limit for your whiteboard, and don't forget to wipe down your wall before hanging!
