The AMG®designation on certain Mercedes Benz vehicles stands for “Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach.” The first two words are the last names of Mercedes’ founders, Hans- Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. The last word, Großaspach, is the name of a city in Germany where Aufrecht was born.
Outside of the lettering, however, AMG carries a more general meaning that encompasses a high caliber of luxury sports car. In order to earn the AMG classification, a Mercedes Benz vehicle is outfitted with specific trim and tuning. AMG vehicles are designed to have more power and finer handling, and have a unique sporty look due to their exterior and interior embellishments. Fast and powerful, these are cars you “drive to feel alive.”
Perhaps the most important feature that distinguishes a Mercedes Benz AMG vehicle is its engine. Each one is handmade in an exclusive manufacturing facility in Affalterbach, Germany. Here, the developers abide by a credo of “one man, one engine,” with one single person giving their full attention to one single engine until it is finished.
Upon completion, the engine is tagged with the name of the creator, a symbol of the individual care and detail with which it was made.
It is something reminiscent of the perfectly chiseled stone blocks of medieval cathedrals, each stamped by the mason who hand-carved them. Mercedes applies this philosophy to all of its vehicles: every part, no matter how small, is integral in building something bigger and more beautiful. Pride and ownership of the AMG engines is a symbol of a dedication to performance and innovation without losing the human element which sets Mercedes apart.
