Answer
GNS3 is a graphical network simulation that allows you to design complex network topologies and run simulations on them, allowing the combination of both real and virtual devices.
GNS3 can allow completion of simulations.
Other packages can be integrated with GNS3. If they are mandatory or not in the installation of GNS3 we show a list of them.
We will only need a computer with the Windows operating system if it's Windows 10 or higher.
Mac and Linux are supported by GNS3. We will show you how to set up a GNS3 laboratory on a Windows 10 computer.
We need a Windows password and usernames with enough privileges to install the software as administrator.
We will need an internet connection to download GNS3 software.
GNS3 is free and we need to create an account to download it. We can access the official GNS3 website and download it for free.
It will show us a pop-up window where we can log in with an existing user.
GNS3 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac or Linux without verification. It also has a virtual machine that can be used for a variety of applications. We will click on the download in our case.
Right-clicking on the installation file GNS3-2.2.8-all-in-one-regular.exe will allow us to run it as an administrator.
The GNS3 installation wizard is in version 2.2.8.
We will mark the components that we want to install.
In the first point of the article, we list them, as well as their function and whether they are required, recommended or optional.
Many of them are integrated with GNS3.
If we need to access our external GNS3 server from other computers on the network, we will mark the GNS3 WebClient component, which will allow external access.
The installation of GNS3 will continue. Npcap will be installed separately.
Acceptance of the license terms is required for some packages.
Click "Next" after the installation is complete.
If we have marked the package, it will show us a window to get a license, but we will mark "No" or "Yes" depending on what we want to do:
We will mark the start of GNS3 and click onFinish.
It will allow us to create a new project, but we will have to cancel it since we don't have any switches in GNS3
In the GNS3 environment, we will have ATM switch, Cloud, Ethernet hub, Frame Relay switch, and NAT.
GNS3 doesn't pre-installed the Cisco IOS because they are proprietary to the company.
If we want to use them, we must first acquire them and then install them in the environment.
We will download the image once the license for the IOS is acquired.
There are several repositories from which the IOS can be downloaded without a license. We can use the search box on the left side of the page.
We make an IOS available on our website for educational purposes only and compatible with GNS3 2.2.8 and Dynamips.
It is very important to look for the IOS that is compatible with GNS3 and Dynamips, otherwise we may have problems during installation and use in our laboratories.
GNS3 will open when we download the image of the device that we want to add to it.
We will be able to access the menu:
Dynamips will be displayed on the left side and we will click on the new one on the right side.
We will click on it.
The file c7200-advipservicesk9-mz.152-4.S5.bin is the previously downloaded IOS of the device.
GNS3 will tell us if we want to open the file. GNS3 can be used with compressed or uncompressed IOS.
We will press Yes if we decompress it.
When we unzip it we see that the .bin file is actually a compressed file that includes an .image file (in our case c7200-advipservicesk9-mz.152-4.S5.image) and that it will unzip for use in the C folder: \Users\username\GNS3\images\IOS.
We will continue to press.
The wizard will check to see if the IOS is compatible with GNS3 and Dynamips, if it is, it will not display warning messages. It could tell us that the IOS is old, warning of the security risk it entails.
When using a compatible and current IOS, it will not show warning messages, but it will ask us to enter the name of the device and the platform in order to see it in the projects. The default values will be left: c7200.
It is advisable to respect the minimum memory recommendation of 512Mb for this particular IOS, to avoid possible errors in its execution.
When we add the slots to the project, we will choose the ones that will be loaded in the routers. Slot 0 of the C7200-IO-FE type is usually left, but you can choose the one that is needed.
The wizard will allow us to add the Idle-PC.
GNS3 is included in this protection mechanism so that if the device consumes more than a threshold of the computer'sCPU, it will limit it so that it doesn't "hang" the computer. It may take a few minutes to get the value if we click on it.
The connection will be made with the GNS3 server to get the PC.
If it gets it, it will show a message indicating its value.
The installation process of the C7200 series of routers in GNS3 will be done by clicking on Finish.
If the values are correct, we will check them and then apply.
We can now use the C7200 as if it were a real one, as we will see below.
A simple project will be created to make sure that the new device works correctly. Click on the "File" menu to do this.
We will enter the name for the project and the location where the files will be stored.
We will click on the button and drag the device to the central part of the work environment.
We will add two VPCs from the "Browse End Devices" button and then drag the endhosts twice.
Our project looks like this:
Clicking on the right mouse button on the routers will allow us to set it up before we add the connections.
We will see all the router configuration options: name, platform, IOS image, midplane, NPE, console type (for now telnet), RAM and NVRAM memory, PCMCIA, slot and adapters, system ID, MAC, idle-pc, idlemax , idlesleep, exec area, power supply, temperature, etc..
Practically as if it were a real computer.
We won't need to modify the configuration for this project. We could have to modify the slot part if we need more physical connections. We will close the window without applying changes.
We will create connections between the different endhosts. Click on the button to add a link.
When we click with the mouse on the routers, it will show us a pop-up menu with the available adapters, and we will choose one.
We will click on the prime endhost and choose the network adapter, Ethernet0:
