Well, did you know that the iPhone XR has three microphones? Yes, whenever you have a problem with your microphone not working or when people can’t hear you during a call, it’s likely because one of the three microphones is not working. It depends on what you’re doing and the app you’re using.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the three microphones on the iPhone XR and where they are located:

This microphone is the most obvious as it’s located on the back of the iPhone XR, next to the camera, just above the flash. Here’s a picture:

This microphone is used for recording videos on the rear camera and noise cancellation when you’re on a call. If you’re having recording issues when shooting video on the rear camera, likely, this microphone is not working correctly.

Ensure the rear mic isn’t dirty or blocked by anything (a case or sticker), and see if that helps. Also, restart your iPhone XR and see if that fixes the issue.

This microphone is on the front of the iPhone XR, just above the screen. It’s tough to know there’s a microphone in this area because it’s so tiny and built-in in the same spot as the speaker, just behind the speaker grill.

This front-facing mic is used for FaceTime calls, recording video with the front-facing camera, and Siri. If you’re having issues with people not hearing you during a video call or while using Siri, it’s probably because this microphone is not working correctly.

A quick way to test if this microphone is working correctly is to make a FaceTime call or record a video with the front-facing camera and see if your friends and family can hear you okay. If they can’t, try restarting your iPhone XR and ensuring the front speaker grill is clean.

If that doesn’t work, you might need to take your iPhone XR to an Apple Store and have them look at it.

This microphone is located on the bottom of the iPhone XR, next to the lightning connector. Again, most people don’t even know there’s a microphone in this area because they confuse it with a speaker.

Some people even thought that only one speaker was working on their iPhones because there was no difference in sound whenever they blocked the microphone grill.

This microphone is used for recording audio and regular phone calls. If you’re having issues with people not being able to hear you during a call, the bottom mic might be the culprit.

A quick way to test if this microphone is working correctly is to make a regular phone call and see if the other person can hear you okay. If they can’t, try restarting your iPhone XR and ensuring no dirt or debris is blocking the mic hole.
