Mulan is a different kind of female role in Disney movies. She is not focused on marriage and is a beautiful, brave, self-sufficient young woman. She doesn't meet the expectations of a Chinese girl of the time: elegant, discreet, and calm. She is clumsy, outspoken, and independent. At the beginning of the first film, she thought that she would never be accepted by her family.
After saving China, she finally sees herself as the person she always wanted to be and the honor she has brought to her family.
She has courage, intelligence, determination, and extraordinary wit that help her through her adventures.
In her first film, she wears short pajamas in the morning, then dresses in a green and yellow dress with a blue and red ribbon. She is helped when she bathes by the women who put her in a dress. She puts on her armor, ties it into a bun, and picks up a sword as she considers taking her father's place. She wears martial arts gear. She wears a light blue dress with a vest similar to a dark blue dress with a red silk ribbon when she crossesdress Ling, Chien-Po, and Yao.
She is wearing a lavender dress in the second movie. She wears a martial arts outfit with a blue-green vest similar to a dress wrapped in a blue suit and a red silk belt as she is needed to complete a mission.
Mulan was sent to the matchmaker to find a husband, but the interview was a disaster and she was told that she wouldn't bring honor to her family.
Mulan's war veteran father, Fa Zhou, is called to fight when the Huns invasion China. Mulan decided to go in her place posing as a man, taking the name Ping, which was supposedly sent by her ancestors to protect her.
Mulan barely gets through the training. At one point, she is told to go away, and then climbs up a pole with weights strapped to her hands to retrieve an arrow shot at the top of the pole that the soldiers were meant to retrieve, helping her prove herself and she manages to stay, immediately improving in everything else and successfully participates in the war against the Huns until she is injured.
After being treated, "Ping" is found to be female and General Li Shang, Mulan's officer, is ordered to kill her, but instead expels her from his army. Mulan is left behind as the battalion moves to the Forbidden City.
After seeing the Huns come out of the snow, Mulan and Mushu decided to go to the Forbidden City instead of returning home.
Mulan tried to warn the Chinese of the Huns' attack. The emperor is kidnapped by the Huns as he addresses the crowd and locked away from being rescued.
Mulan created a ruse with the help of Chien Po, Ling, and Yao, by dressing them as women, scaling the castle walls, and pretending to be concubines, in order to get the soldiers to join her. The Huns were defeated, the emperor was saved, and the fireworks tower was destroyed.
Mulan embraces returning to her family and a visit from her former general, as the Emperor offers his congratulations.
Mulan and Shang are getting ready to get married, but are distracted by an assignment from the Emperor who wants the three princesses to accompany their own wedding ceremony. The couple have different views on various issues, which causes their relationship to become strained.
Mulan will no longer need her guardian spirit if she we we marry Shang. He was able to get the two of them to break up because of this. When bandits attack, Mulan and Shang fight them off, and Mulan is devastated when Shang dies trying to save her Mulan took her place in marrying the son of the ruler of the neighboring land to make sure that the three princesses weren't forced into marriage against her will. Mulan and Shang will finally get married when Mushu pretends to be the Unity Gold Dragon and cancel the ceremony.
As a result of this, Mushu will remain Mulan's guardian spirit.
She makes appearances in some episodes as a guest of the club, making appearances among the other characters.
