I heard that the oil companies suppressed the ability of cars to run on gas, because it was the carburetor that allowed them to run on gas.The soft-drink companies have figured out how to sell water for more than the price of gasoline, so I would have expected that technology would have been resurrected, except that nowadays cars are fuel injected and there is no role for a carburetor.

I think that's right.

This isn't a truly serious answer.Cars can run on water, but first you have to break that water into hydrogen and oxygen.
