Xinyao (Chinese: 新谣; pinyin: Xīnyáo) is a genre of songs that is unique to Singapore.[1] It is a contemporary Mandarin vocal genre that emerged and rose to fame in Singapore between the late 1970s to 1980s.[2] Xinyao songs are composed and sung by Singaporeans and it is an outlet for them to express their thoughts and feelings around themes like friendships or love stories. Xinyao is a Chinese noun comprising two words: Xīn (新) which is an abbreviation for Singapore, and yáo (谣) for song. The extended form is Xīnjiāpō gēyáo (新加坡歌谣), which simply means "Singapore songs".

Xinyao can be clearly identified by its distinctive style of Mandarin genre, that is conveyed through poetic lyrics with clean acoustic accompaniments.[3] Often, a group of people sing and harmonize together,[4] accompanied solely by the guitar. As the movement grew and became semi-commercialized in the early 1990s, more sophisticated accompaniments like drums and castanets were adopted.

Early pioneers of this style of music include Wong Hong Mok, Liang Wern Fook, Dawn Gan, Eric Moo and Billy Koh, who discovered and groomed many successful Singapore artistes in the Asia Chinese-Pop music scene (including Kit Chan, A-Do and JJ Lin).

In the Chinese music scene, the local xinyao movement started in the mid-1980s and was the source of a number of success stories in today's regional Chinese pop music industry.[5] This genre was started by a group of students (mainly secondary schools, junior colleges and polytechnics), who were influenced by minyao (民谣), a Taiwanese folk songs movement in the 1970s,[1] school campus songs (校园民歌) from Taiwan. The Taiwanese folk genre sought an authentic native Taiwan identity exemplified by songs such as "Grandma's Penghu Bay" (外婆的澎湖湾). The rise in popularity of the school campus song movement (校园民歌) especially among the Chinese students and schools came at a time of major education reforms led by then Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Mr Goh Keng Swee which sought to streamline and align Chinese education into the national syllabus, which can be interpreted as a spontaneous reaction to assert identity against these change.

In September 1982, Nanyang Technological University's Chinese-language newspaper, Nanyang Business Daily, organised a seminar titled The Song We Sing (我们唱着歌). The seminar revolved around discussing the emerging trend of xinyao, which was representative of Singaporean composed schoolyard songs at that time. Furthermore, it was also during the 1980s that the term xinyao was coined and popularised in Singapore.[6]

Xinyao was considered to be at its peak in the 1980s as the songs propelled many Singaporean singers and songwriters to stardom.[1] It was during this period where many students who loved xinyao gathered and staged their own performances. Some of the earliest xinyao groups includes The Straws (水草三重唱), The Merlion (鱼尾狮小组), and Underpass Group (地下铁小组).[1] This movement soon spread across Singapore, beyond schools and into the public arena such as community centres. Led by The Merlion, which was formed at Clementi Community Centre in 1983, there were more than 20 xinyao groups registered with a neighbourhood community centre by mid-1987 [7]..

Songs such as A Step at a Time written and sung by xinyao artists were popular with those born in the mid-1960s to 1970s. In 1983, the song Encounter, a duet by Moo and Huang Hui-zhen, became the first xinyao song to make it to the Mandarin pop song ranking chart "Pick of Pops" (新加坡龙虎榜) on Singapore's radio station, YES 933. The song was part of a xinyao album Tomorrow 21 (明天21) released in 1983-84 and were created by Billy Koh, Koh Nam Seng, Huang Yuan Cheng, Zhang Jia Qiang and Colin Goh, was considered by some fans[8] as the landmark album that brought xinyao to the mainstream media. The creation of this album led to the birth of what would become Ocean Butterflies International,[9] a major Singaporean/Pan-Asian music publishing house.

The decline of xinyao began in the early 1990s. Despite constant efforts to promote the xinyao genre such as xinyao concerts and inter-school songwriting competitions, the popularity of xinyao continue to wane. Following the stop of the Xinyao Festival in 1990 due to the lack of funding, the Sing Music Awards was consequently scrapped due to limited album releases.[10] Other factors contributing the decline of xinyao including the rise of Taiwanese and Hong Kong songs in Singapore's music industry,[4] as the declining of new xinyao talents in Singapore.

Xinyao was revived in the early 2000s when a series of xinyao concerts caught the eye of the public once again. A reunion concert in March 2002 where xinyao pioneers such as Moo, Liang and Gan were featured.[11] Beginning in 2002, an annual xinyao concert featuring xinyao veterans were organised, with Taiwanese singers participating to promote the concert.[12][13]

The revival of xinyao has been attributed to nostalgia for the era among the generations who grew up listening to that music genre. In recent times, Xinyao stirred the interest of the younger generations as well.[14] Reality competitions such as Project SuperStar and Campus SuperStar were also organised in television to promote the xinyao culture.

Today, xinyao is regarded as a key highlight of Singapore's music scene in the 1980s. Although some argue that any current local compositions by young musicians are considered part of xinyao, the term generally refers to the folk genre of songs by Singaporeans that emerged in the 1980s.[15]

The xinyao movement was largely home-grown and enriched the local arts scene in post-war Singapore. It was one of the more notable youth music subcultures in Singapore which outgrew its origins and gained public acceptance as well as support.

As a young nation, Singapore was still in the process of nation building in the 1980s, and different campaigns were constantly launched in search of constructing a national identity and “characteristics” that are unique to Singapore.[16] Using lyrics that relates closely to the daily lives of Singaporean youth, xinyao brought out a music culture that aptly represented Singapore in a unique way.

One of the very crucial and deciding factors that pushed xinyao towards its level of popularity was the increased exposure in radio stations as well as on television. In 1983, there was a weekly half-hour radio programme that was specially dedicated for xinyao and its musicians. The programme was titled Our Singers and Songwriters (歌韵心声) and started by the then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). In the same year, SBC broadened its annual Chinese Talentime (斗歌竞艺) programme , to include a vocal group section. Following its success, it then further expanded to include a local-composition category in 1985. As an effort to promote xinyao, the SBC also used xinyao songs as theme songs for Chinese television drama serials.[17]

The xinyao movement was further strengthened with the release of the first xinyao album in 1984 titled Tomorrow We’ll Be 21 (明天21).

Following its revival, xinyao starts to reappear in the eyes of the public. In 2007, xinyao was showcased in The Chinese-language musical If There're Seasons (天冷就回来), the musical featured 30 of Liang's compositions, of which many were his signature xinyao pieces.[18] In 2015, a xinyao documentary The Songs We Sang was released in Golden Village.

In 2018, a Singaporean reality-competition series organised by Mediacorp, titled SPOP Sing!, targets local students from Singapore in search of finding a homegrown musical talent as well as promoting local music culture of both mandopop and xinyao, as well as paying tribute to modern singers that rose to fame, such as Sing! China finalists Nathan Hartono[19] and Joanna Dong.[20] A competition with a similar format aired in 2013, the fourth season of Campus Superstar, also use only mandopop and xinyao music only during the competition.[21]

Xinyao songs such as Voices from the Heart (小人物的心声) were also staged and performance during the 2014 and 2017's National Day Parade in Singapore.

During his Chinese National Day Rally speech in 2014, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong started off by singing to a popular xinyao tune, Small Stream that Flows Forever (细水长流) by Liang[22]

In 2015, a school xinyao programme was introduced by Singapore's Ministry of Education. The programme includes a singing, songwriting competition and media appreciation sessions and songwriting workshops. The aim of the programme is to enhance student's Chinese learning abilities in terms of writing and reading.[23] As part of the effort to revive the xinyao spirit and to help participating students, 20 xinyao music appreciation sessions and 2 songwriting workshops were conducted by veteran xinyao songwriters - Jim Lim, Roy Li, Zhang Lesheng and Tan Kah Beng. The programme can be deemed to be a success as over 10,000 students participated in its 2017 iteration.[24] The success of the programme has also led to the production of SPOP Sing!.[21]

What is xin yao?

Answer

With it being in such high-demand also means you may have to end up waiting a long time in line to actually board the adorable rat-designed ride vehicles. But, that’s why we’re here.

We want to help you do whatever possible to not only be able to get on the Ratatouille-inspired attraction, but to be able to do so without having to wait hours.

Here are 5 ways to ride Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure without long waits.

For most guests, there are 5 main ways that will allow you to ride Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure with the least amount of waiting:

Now, let’s take a look at all of these options:

In addition to your standard Standby Line, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure also has a “Lightning Lane,” which is the new name for the old FastPass line.

Why does it matter which line you use? Well, because the Lightning Lane allows you to bypass the Standby Line, and that means you’ll have less of a wait.

As you can imagine, skipping that long Standby Line isn’t free. You’ll have to pay extra for it, and this is where it can get a little bit confusing, but stick with us:

For nearly every attraction at Epcot (as well as the other 3 parks), no matter the time of year, the Lightning Lane is available with EITHER Genie+ or as an Individual Lighting Lane Selection – and they never switch back and forth between the 2.

While Remy’s Ratatouille used to move from being available as an Individual Lightning Lane Selection over to Genie+ during busy times of years, this is no longer the case.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure has strictly been part of the Genie+ system for some time now and it seems like it’s going to stay that way. Of course, if this changes, we will be sure to let you know (and update this post as a result).

That means, if you want to bypass the Standby Line and use the Lightning Lane entrance for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, you’ll have to pay for Genie+ in order to do so.

Aside from a few special situations, if you’d prefer to not pay-to-ride Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure via the Lightning Lane, you’ll need to use the Standby Line. We have tips for how to minimize your waits using it down below.

When booking a Lightning Lane for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure using Genie+, the price varies. Genie+ uses a date-based pricing system, with busier times of the year being more expensive.

Currently, Genie+ starts at $15 per ticket, per day (plus tax) but that price can go all the way up to $35 per ticket, per day.

But — there is no way to know ahead of time how much Genie+ is going to cost. Instead, you will see the price when you go to purchase it inside the My Disney Experience app.

That said, you can expect the busier the time of year to be more expensive. For example, during Spring 2023, Genie+ reached $35 per day (plus tax).

Confused about what you should book first at Epcot? Check out our handy chart for help:

Where you enter Epcot makes a big difference when it comes to getting as close as possible to the front of the Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure line.

By entering at the front of the park during Early Theme Park Entry or when rope dropping regular theme park hours, this means you have to hike it all the way to the World Showcase and all those other guests using the International Gateway will be ahead of you.

So, let’s say you do enter at the front. First, you need to make sure you follow the signs to go the correct way to World Showcase due to all of the “progress”, aka construction walls. FYI: You want to go to the right of Spaceship Earth.

If you go the wrong way, you’ll be in line behind guests who are most likely heading to Test Track and that will force you to backtrack. And, even just a few minutes delay will mean extra long lines by the time you make it to Remy’s.

Even if you do go the correct way from the front of the park towards the France pavilion, there’s a very high chance that you’ll be at a major disadvantage whether you’re staying onsite (have access to Early Theme Park Entry) or offsite (rope drop regular park hours).

Just think about all those people walking from nearby resorts and other guests using the Skyliner who will enter at the International Gateway.

They will probably already be in line for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure while you’re still walking to World Showcase.

By entering at the International Gateway, you’ll be closer to the France pavilion, where Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is located.

Upon entering the International Gateway, you’ll want to walk straight, make a right across the bridge towards the France pavilion, and head to the ride.

Depending on the time of day and crowds, you may see a Cast Member holding a sign directing you the correct way or to the end of the line.

If you don’t have access to the Skyliner or aren’t staying a resort nearby, here’s a tip:

Make an early morning breakfast reservation at any of the hotels on the Skyliner or within walking distance to the International Gateway, so you can strive to have a lower wait time for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.

Important: Sometimes Disney Resort hotels are strict about letting guests just park at a hotel unless they have a room or dining reservation.

Two other possible options to consider…

You could drive, bus, or Uber/Lyft to Hollywood Studios and then take the Skyliner or walk to Epcot’s International Gateway. But, this will only work if the opening time for Hollywood Studios is way ahead of the opening time for Epcot. Plus, the walk from Hollywood Studios to Epcot is 1.2 miles and about 15 to 20 minutes, if you walk at a slower pace.

If you’re staying onsite and you want to avoid paying anything extra to ride Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Early Theme Park Entry (only available to onsite guests) may be your best bet.

Unlike Extended Evening Theme Park Hours, Early Theme Park Entry is available to all onsite guests and occur every day at each park. This also means these hours are a bit easier to work into a schedule.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is open during Early Theme Park Entry, and sometimes they even begin letting guests on before the early entry is officially scheduled to start.

But to be successful with this approach, you’re going to need to make sure you arrive to Epcot ahead of the majority of the crowds.

Here’s what you need to know about how to get to Epcot in time for Early Theme Park Entry:

The first buses typically begin running about 1 hour before Early Theme Park Entry. If your goal is to be on that first bus, you’ll need to be at the bus stop about 90 minutes before Early Theme Park Entry begins.

The Disney Skyliner can also form long lines, and although it moves quickly, you’ll still want to be at the front of the pack.

Typically, the Skyliner line to Epcot begins running approximately 1 hour before Early Theme Park Entry is scheduled to begin.

And, just like with the buses, you’ll want to be at the front of the line to board. That means you’ll want to aim to be down to the station no later than 90 minutes before Early Theme Park Entry begins.

If you are driving, the parking lot booths typically open 1 hour before Early Theme Park Entry begins. Oftentimes, however, cars will begin lining up at the booths before that so arriving a few minutes before that 1 hour mark is a good idea.

If you are staying at a resort that is within walking distance of Epcot (Yacht Club, Beach Club & Beach Club Villas, Boardwalk Inn & Villas, Swan, Dolphin, Swan Reserve), getting to Epcot ahead of the majority of the crowds is relatively easy, because you’ll be able to walk.

We recommend you plan to arrive by foot about 75 minutes before Early Theme Park Entry begins. When walking, you will arrive at the International Gateway entrance — which is better than the front of the park for this particular instance.

Why? You’ll be much closer to the France Pavilion, where Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is located, compared to the front entrance.

For reference, the walk from Beach Club to Epcot is about 5-7 minutes – more if you have shorter legged people with you and less if you tend to walk fast – but, 10 minutes is a good average to use.

If you arrive much earlier than that, you may be held back a bit from the gates, but the earlier you arrive the easier it will make it to position yourself ahead of the bus, Skyliner, and car crowds.

Plus, being able to walk to Epcot is a huge advantage, so it makes sense to use it!

Once you get inside the park, to get to Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, you’ll walk straight, make a right across the bridge towards the France pavilion, and follow the crowds/Cast Members with signs.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is located in the new expanded area of the France pavilion.

For guests who have access or choose to use the Skyliner, this is the best form of transportation to ride in the morning when trying to take advantage of Early Theme Park Entry at Epcot to get in Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Standby Line.

Why? Epcot’s Skyliner station is at the International Gateway, which means you’ll enter the park much closer to the France Pavilion, where Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is located.

If you’re staying at a nearby resort (BoardWalk, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Swan, Dolphin, Swan Reserve), we recommend walking so you don’t have to wait for transportation. This way, you’ll also be able to enter at the International Gateway.

This also may give you a better chance of getting to the front of the line compared to if you were to enter at the front entrance of the park by Spaceship Earth.

FYI: The Monorail drops guests off at the front of Epcot, not at the International Gateway.

We explain above about entering Epcot at the front vs. the International Gateway.

If you are staying offsite, it is likely the Individual Lightning Lane passes will be gone by the time you can purchase one (but still check right at park opening, just in case!).

Remember, offsite guests aren’t eligible for Early Theme Park Entry, meaning all of the guests who are eligible will already be in line, since they have a 30-minute head start.

But, if you’re an offsite guest, your 2 best bets for minimizing waits will be to be at the front of the pack for regular park entry or hop in line at the end of the night.

If staying until the end of the night won’t work for you, or if you prefer to get your ride out of the way, being at the front of the pack when the park opens for offsite guests will be your best bet.

You’ll still need to arrive to the park early. Aim to be at the gates about 1 hour before the park officially opens. If you are traveling during an extra busy time of the year (like the holidays), you may need to even be earlier.

You’ll be directed away from the onsite guests to separate lines. You’ll need to stay at the front of the pack of offsite people if you want to keep your wait for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure as low as possible.

For guests who have access or choose to use the Skyliner, this is the best form of transportation to ride in the morning when trying to take advantage of Early Theme Park Entry at Epcot to get in Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Standby Line.

Since Epcot’s Skyliner station is at the International Gateway, this means you’ll enter the park much closer to Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in the France Pavilion.

We explain above about entering Epcot at the front compared to the International Gateway.

Another great option for offsite guests or even onsite guests that plan to arrive to the park later in the day is to hop in the line at the end of the evening.

We recommend you don’t try to cut it too close, but as long as you are in line before the park closes, you’ll be allowed to ride.

There are a couple downsides to this approach, though.

Although ride closures are less frequent now than they were when the attraction first opened, interruptions do still happen. And, if one happens late in the day, the ride may not be available before the park closes, which means you could miss out on getting a ride.

That doesn’t happen very often anymore, but it is something to keep in mind.

It’s important to also add that riding at the end of the night may also mean that you’ll miss out on nighttime entertainment. If you don’t care about the nighttime spectacular, great, but if you do, this is definitely something to keep in mind.

Unlike Early Theme Park Entry which is available to all onsite guests, Extended Evening Theme Park Hours are only available for Disney Deluxe and Deluxe Villa guests.

These extended evening hours allow eligible guests to stay at Epcot (or Magic Kingdom) for 2 hours past official park closing.

Disney doesn’t publish the schedule too far in advance, but the hours usually fall on Mondays or Wednesdays.

If you are lucky enough to be traveling at a time when one is available, the Extended Evening Theme Park Hours will be a fantastic option for riding Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure with minimal waits.

Keep in mind, though, that you’ll either need to have a Park Pass reservation for Epcot or have Park Hopping options on your tickets to participate.

VIP Tours are another option for minimizing your waits for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.

Although they are not an inexpensive way to skip the line, if one is in your budget, using a VIP tour guide will definitely keep your waits short on nearly every attraction at WDW.

At this time, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure does not have a Single Rider Line. It only has 2 lines:

All that said, we know from experience at other attractions with this option — like Test Track and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster — that Single Rider Lines can significantly reduce your wait, so if Disney does ever decide to open the Single Rider Line for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, that will be a good option to help with long lines, too.

No, you cannot. Why? Because you don’t need to. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure doesn’t have a height requirement, meaning all guests are able to ride.

The Disability Access Service is *only* available for registered guests that, due to a disability, have difficulty tolerating the wait in a standard line or queue.

And to be clear, Disney’s official policy states:

“A Guest whose disability is based on the necessity to use a wheelchair or scooter does not need DAS. Depending on the experience, Guests utilizing a wheelchair or scooter will either wait in the standard queue or receive a return time at the attraction that is comparable to the current standby wait.”

But, while some attractions are available to be booked in the DAS system ahead of arrival, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is not.

Instead, registered guests using DAS will need to request their return time after they enter the park (we recommend doing this first thing!).

To be fair, with any method other than purchasing an Individual Lightning Lane spot, you will be spending some time waiting.

But, the goal is to do as much of the waiting as possible outside regular theme park hours. It just makes more sense to wait an hour before the park opens or after the park closes than it does to spend precious park touring time doing it.

In addition, to minimize the risk of illness in foreign countries, carry out a complete health check before your departure and ensure that all your vaccinations are up to date. If for some reason you will need to undergo long-term treatment, do not hesitate to take all your medications with you. This will save you from buying it in the United States when needed.

You can then be treated by the organization's health professionals, but also by other specialists paid on a fee-for-service basis. Being able to treat other patients apart from contributors, they must nevertheless appear on the list of professionals approved by the HMO. If you come to the United States for an internship or a job, you can ask the company that hired you or your sponsor to include “medical insurance” in your prerogatives.

But of course, he is not obliged to accept, so before accepting a position on American territory, do not forget to take this particular criterion into account. The American president launched his social protection program in 2010: Obamacare. An expensive health system, without any support! It is important for you to know that the American healthcare system is very different from that in France.

If there is indeed a Social Security, its role is not to support the medical expenses of Americans, but rather to pay their retirement allowances. In other words, there is no health insurance in the USA! As you will have understood, it is in your interest to be medically insured in the United States. So note that you will have the choice between three health plans: PPOs, HMOs and IIs. This initiative is not mandatory, unlike the French Health Insurance, you can also live in the United States without any health insurance.

But it is at your own risk! In the event of a health problem, serious or not, you will have to pay all medical costs out of your own pocket. If you want to be covered for your health expenses, like all residents of the country, you will need to take out “private” health insurance. Operating like mutual health insurance, you will have to pay monthly contributions, the value of which depends on the health risks you wish to insure, in order to benefit from coverage in the event of illness. Undoubtedly the most expensive, Indemnity Insurances are independent insurance companies, that is to say they do not depend on any company or organization.

They are thus based on a fairly simple provident system: insured members will contribute according to the risks they wish to cover. The more important they are, the more the contribution will be consequent. - seniors (aged over 65) as well as people with disabilities who benefit from the “Medicare” program - families with children in great financial difficulty who benefit from the “Medicaid” program. - Apart from these categories of people, financing in the field of health is almost non-existent. Are you planning to leave for the United States? Find out how health insurance works in the USA!

PPO, HMO or II? To choose well, base yourself on your needs, on the real risks that you will incur and of course, on your budget. Do not hesitate to inquire with the consulate before your departure and to simulate your membership online upon your arrival. Comparing the different benefits you will receive and the costs you will have to pay will allow you to save some money. PPOs are private insurance companies that offer employees medical coverage through their company. In other words, the monthly contribution will be borne by the latter who will pay it into a tax-exempt “Health Savings Account”.

Of course, the American government helps, but this funding is granted under certain conditions and concerns only a minority part of the general public: Functioning like the “collective company mutuals”, which are very common in France, the PPOs cover the medical costs, consultation costs and hospitalization costs of their members. And this, on the condition that they have been caused by the health professionals and the hospital establishments that they will have defined beforehand and with whom they work in close collaboration. HMOs or Health Maintenance Organizations are entities that offer both insurance and medical care services. In other words, by subscribing to this insurance company, in return for a flat-rate contribution, you will be able to benefit from a full healthcare service in the event of illness.
