If you want to start from scratch, you can install everything in a new virtual machine. It will be a long and tedious job that will take a lot of time. We will have to uninstall all the software we had. I will show you how to increase the space of the virtual machine in less than 10 minutes. I hope you enjoy it and use it.

The following elements will be used for the realization of this lesson.

It is advisable to make a backup of all the machines that we are going to modify before we make any changes to our virtual machine. To do this, we need to copy the *.vdi file of our virtual machine to another directory and then make a copy of it to another directory. We can make a copy from the command line or from the Windows file browser.

If you don't know the location of the virtual disk, we can get it from the VirtualBox application itself, and then select the virtual hard disk that we want to change.

We can make any changes to the virtual machine after completing the backup. We will have a backup if necessary.

The procedure is only valid for disks that have been created as "dynamic" type. It doesn't work for disks with fixed sizes. If you have created them as a fixed type, this procedure won't work for you.

Modifications to our virtual machines can be made without fear if we have carried out the previous step. The VboxManage tool has a modifyhd option. The Windows 7 machine we have assigned a disk size of 12GB will be increased to 16GB. We will allocate 12GB of space for the machine, and later increase it by 2GB. The following commands will be executed from the command line.

The total space that will be occupied by the disk is determined using the --rezise option of the VBoxManage program.

The process takes a few seconds. We have to make changes to the operating system to expand the free space on the disk.

We will look at the properties of our virtual machine and the part of the hard disk to see if the changes have been completed correctly. You can see that the initial 12GB of the Windows VDI disk has been replaced by 16GB.

The new VDI size is larger.

To increase the space of the partition, we have to open theDisk Management tool from the control panel, select the partition, click on the right button, and then select theExtend volume option. It will not be necessary to modify anything if you follow the steps.

There is a new 4GB Unallocated space.

The Windows and Disk Management wizard is very easy to use, we will only tell you about the free space available, how much more space we want to allocate to C: to expand. 4095MB is the maximum that leaves us.

There is a selection of disks and size.

The initial partition of C: has a total size of almost 16GB, shown in the following image. If we need more space in the future, the procedure would be the same as now.
