Oksana Baiul is a Ukrainian retired competitive figure skater. She is best known for her exploits on the ice, including winning a gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, at the age of 16. In addition, Baiul won gold at the 1993 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
When she turned professional in 1994, she toured the United States to start her career in skating. Unfortunately, she struggled with injuries and alcohol addiction, forcing her coaches to drop her for the Champions on Ice tour in 1997. Here is more of her story.
Oksana Baiul was born Oksana Serhiyivna Baiul-Farina on 16 November 1977 (age 44) in Dnipro, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. She is the only daughter of Sergey Baiul (father) and Marina Baiul (mother). Oksana grew up in the military-industrial complex city of Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
Oksana Baiul's parents divorced when she was two years old. As a result, her father disappeared from her life, forcing her mother and maternal grandparents to raise her. She started taking figure skating lessons and ballet when she turned three. At five years old, Oksana preferred skating and trained with a well-respected coach in Ukraine.
Unfortunately, Oksana suffered several losses when she was still young. First, her grandparents died in 1987 and 1988. Then, in 1991, her mother died of ovarian cancer. Oksana was 13 years old when her mother died. Although Oksana’s father came to the funeral, the athlete did not accept him.
She opted to live with the wife of her coach. But then her coach left for Canada, forcing Oksana to live with friends. In 1992, Oksana moved to Odessa, Ukraine and lived in a dormitory. But since she had a promising career in figure skating, the state covered all her expenses. In 1993, she lived with her coach for one month as she prepared for the European and World championships.
After winning a gold medal in the 1994 Winter Olympics at 16, Oksana turned pro and went to the United States on tour and began her professional career. In 2010, Baiul applied to the extramural studies department of Drahomanov National Pedagogical University to obtain a higher education.
Oksana Baiul wanted to become a ballet when she was still a child. However, the coaches at that time considered her not thin enough. As a result, her maternal grandmother took her for skating lessons, which proved to be the best decision of her life.
Oksana started training skating when she was four years old. At five, she studied with a prominent Ukrainian coach named Stanislav Koritek in 1983. However, her coach left for Canada to pursue a coaching career. In 1992, Oksana got a new coach named Galina Zmievskaya. Galina coached Oksana and even offered to live with her after her mother's death.
In 1993, Oksana won a silver medal at the 1993 European Championships in Helsinki, Finland. She then became a world champion at 15. In 1994, Oksana won a silver medal at the European Championships in Copenhagen, Canada.
At the 1994 Winter Olympics, Oksana finished second in the short programme of the Ladies’ figure skating singles. She then competed in the free skate, winning the Olympic gold medal. The win saw her become one of the youngest figure skating Olympic champions.
After winning the 1994 Winter Olympics, Oksana turned professional and signed a profitable contract to tour the United States. She then signed an agreement with William Morris Endeavor, an American talent agency.
Baiul retired as a figure skater in the late 2000s. She then turned to other activities, including playing a role in the skating stage musical Cold as Ice. Furthermore, she appeared on several television programmes, including Celebrity Pok*r Showdown and Master of Champions. Currently, Oksana Baiul has her clothing and jewellery line.
