However, it is not always that you can afford to bank on makeup or contact lenses to make your eyes shine bright. Naturally beautiful eyes are a feature coveted by many and yet, not everyone is able to achieve this. We, at Be Beautiful, decided to help you in this endeavor and have curated a list of tips and tricks so that you can get naturally beautiful eyes without the use of makeup or any eye accessory.
Now, a number of things, right from the pollutants in the air to the UV rays of the sun, or maybe a lack of moisture in your skin or a lack of sleep in your life, can make your eyes (and the areas around it) look dull and lifeless. UV rays tend to cause pigmentation, which leads to the areas around your eyes turning dark. Dark circles can also appear when there is a lack of sleep and the possibility of fine lines and wrinkles increases when the body is lacking enough antioxidants.
Often, the lack of moisture in your skin tends to cause it to become dry, with lines and wrinkles starting to appear (just as you’d imagine a berry losing moisture and shrinking). The area around your eyes needs even more moisturizing than usual since the skin there lacks oil glands that produce sebum, which is responsible to keep your skin moisturized.
Moisturising the region around your eyes helps keep the skin there plump and taut. Since about two thirds of your skin is made of water, keeping your skin well-hydrated is extremely important. Drink enough water throughout the day, at least two litres of it spaced at regular intervals. You could also dip cotton pads in cold water and place them over your closed eyelids for about 10 minutes to help your eyes feel lighter and more relaxed.
Using a good moisturizer for the area around your eyes helps the skin from getting dry and keeps fine lines and wrinkles from appearing prematurely. However, keep in mind that the skin around the eyes is thinner than the skin on the rest of your face and hence, you need to be careful about the moisturiser you’re using. If the moisturiser gives you a slight stinging sensation or turns the skin red, or just seems like it is not working, we’d suggest that you opt for an eye cream instead.
A simple facial massage, especially around the eye region, can do a whole lot of good for your eyes by helping improve the blood circulation and making the eyes feel more relaxed. It also helps in draining any excess fluid that may be present in the region and causing the eyes to look puffy.
Certain simple facial exercises and massages done with your fingers, such as pushing the eyebrows up and closing the eyes can help keep the region around your eyes pretty toned as well, preventing the occurrence of fine lines and wrinkles.
With your eyes being one of the most sensitive and exposed regions of your body, it is important that you protect your eyes, as well as the skin around them, at all times. Wash your eyes whenever there’s any irritation instead of rubbing them. Since we touch our face and the region around our eyes with our hands many times throughout the day, it is crucial that we regularly wash our hands so as to keep them clean and free from bacteria. Wearing sunglasses is another excellent way to keep your eyes protected, not only from the glare and pollutants but also from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
Apart from getting a good night’s sleep and having a healthy diet full of fruits and green leafy vegetables, there are a few other remedies that you can try out to prevent and cure fine lines, puffy eyes, dark circles and sunken eyes. As we’ve mentioned before, keeping a cotton ice pad constricts the blood vessels, making the eyes feel lighter and more relaxed. You could even keep a couple of spoons in the freezer for a while before taking them out and placing the curved parts over your closed eyelids.
If you’re worried about fine lines and wrinkles, making a mask by beating egg whites and applying to the region around the eyes for about 10-15 minutes is an excellent way to tighten the skin in that region. As for dark circles, the juice of a couple of cucumbers seems to work very effectively. Or you could even try making a mask out of tomato pulp, mixed with some lime juice and a teaspoon of gram flour, as well as just a pinch of turmeric powder in order to reduce the darkness of the skin around your eyes.
If you’ve got puffy or inflamed eyes, placing green tea bags soaked in chilled water or slices of a raw potato over your eyes will help reduce puffiness. Dipping a couple of cotton pads in ice cold milk also works just as well. If your eyes are feeling dull and looking sunken, mixing some honey with almond oil and applying it to the region around your eyes will have your eyes looking fresh and bright in a matter of weeks.

Following a very dry April, the summer of 2007 was one of the wettest on record. By the end of June, heavy rainfall overloaded drainage systems by the influx of surface water and very high water levels in main rivers and brooks, leading to flooding in some areas in Gloucestershire.
