The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019, released today, includes a ranking of the 600 (extended from 500) top universities around the world for computer science, based on a methodology which includes academic reputation, research impact and other factors.

If you want to study computer science in the US, you’re spoilt for choice, with 109 US universities featuring in the 2019 table. Read on as we count down the study destination’s top 10, all of which make the global top 20.

Up an impressive 13 spots to rank 20th in this year’s computer science ranking, New York University (NYU) is one of the highest ranked universities in New York City, and receives a very high score for the ‘citations per paper’ indicator, a measure of research impact.

NYU has been associated with 37 Nobel Laureates and seven Turing Award winners, as well as a large number of inventions and discoveries, ranging from defibrillators, pacemakers, television, cordless telephones, contact lenses and many more.

Also based in New York, Columbia University climbed six places this year to rank joint 18th for computer science alongside China’s Peking University. Like NYU, it gains its best score in the citations per paper indicator, and is well known as a center of important research. It benefits from its location in the huge metropolis of New York City and aims to attract a diverse student body and faculty.  One of the most selective US universities, Columbia counts 38 billionaires among its alumni.

Ranked 17th for computer science this year and eighth in the US, the University of Washington receives high scores for both citations per paper and the ‘H-index’, another measure of research impact. The university’s Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, which opened its doors in 2003, is a state-of-the-art, 85,000 square-foot facility which cost $72 million. Computer science is one of the most popular majors at Washington, but admission is highly competitive, with only a third of undergraduate applicants successful.

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is ranked joint 13th with Princeton University this year and earns its strongest score in the citations per paper category of the computer science ranking. UCLA is known for being the birthplace of the Internet, as nearly 50 years ago in October 1969 a team from the university sent the very first message over the ARPANET, an early computer network which formed the basis for the Internet.

Next in our look at the top computer science schools in the US is Princeton University, down slightly this year at joint 13th. An Ivy League university, Princeton achieves a near-perfect score for citations per faculty member as well as a high score for the H-index. Its Department of Computer Science within the School of Engineering and Applied Science has educated numerous notable figures such as the ‘father of computer science’ Alan Turing, Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, and Google executive Eric Schmidt.

Harvard University is ranked seventh among the world’s top computer science schools and may be an ideal choice if you’re concerned about your chosen university’s reputation among graduate employers, as it receives a consistently perfect score in the employer reputation indicator. Its John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is involved in ground-breaking research to tackle some of the fundamental problems in science and engineering, and will open a new state-of-the-art expanded campus in Allston in 2020.

Ranked fourth both in the US and globally in the computer science ranking, the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) offers two flexible, highly selective undergraduate programs, including the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (EECS), which combines the fundamentals of electrical engineering and computer science in one major. The other option, a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science, gives students the flexibility to explore other fields of interest.

Carnegie Mellon University is ranked third in the world and among the top computer science schools in the US this year, once again achieving a perfect score in the academic reputation category. It’s another school known for being a center of many discoveries and innovations in this field, such as the first Wi-Fi network (created on campus in 1993), several of the first artificial intelligence software programs and programming languages, and Navlab, the first autonomous car program.

Although many of the top computer science schools featured in this list have claimed impressive scores in the citations per faculty and/or H-index indicators (both measures of research impact), none of them can overtake Stanford University, which achieved perfect scores for both.

Founded in 1965, Stanford’s Computer Science Department is unique for its location in Silicon Valley, as well as its impressive cohort of successful alumni, such as the founders or co-founders of Netflix, Google, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp.

And finally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues to be the world leader in this year’s computer science ranking (as well as claiming the overall number one spot in the QS World University Rankings® for seven years in a row).

Students at MIT’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science benefit from a vast range of programs and resources, including the Advanced Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (SuperUROP), the EECS Communication Lab, the 6-A MEng Thesis Program, and more. Like Stanford, its alumni includes the founders of household names such as Buzzfeed, DropBox, Intel, HuffPost and Hewlett-Packard.

Of course, there are dozens more top computer science schools in the US, with 10 more institutions ranked among the global top 50, including Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) (24th), Cornell University (25th), California Institute of Technology (Caltech) (joint 29th) and the University of Texas at Austin (also ranked joint 29th).

Need affordable health insurance in Idaho but not sure where to start? Get answers to some of the top questions about buying Idaho health insurance.

When you hear Idaho you may think potatoes. But make no joke because Idaho has been at the forefront of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) with its own state-run health insurance exchange since 2014.1 Nearly 215,000 residents had no health insurance at that time. Idaho has made progress by lowering its uninsured population to about 183,000 as of 2019. This number represents 11% of the state’s 1.7 million residents.

Idaho offers several health insurance options for individuals, families, and small business owners. Depending on your income, you may even qualify for cheap health insurance in Idaho. To help you get started, we’ve come up with answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about buying health insurance in Idaho.

Idaho’s open enrollment for 2022 health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) takes place from November 1 to January 15.2  This span is also referred as the 2022 Open Enrollment Period (OEP). Outside of the OEP, you can use Special Enrollment Periods to sign up for health insurance year-round if you have a qualifying life event. Idaho gives you 60 days from the date of your qualifying event to submit proof and enroll in a health plan.3

You can enroll in ACA health coverage directly through the Idaho Health Insurance Marketplace at YourHealthIdaho.org.

Your Health Idaho offers metal plans in bronze, silver, and gold as well as catastrophic health insurance. All Idaho metal plans include essential health benefits, but Idaho catastrophic plans aren’t required to include them.4

A Marketplace silver plan in Idaho costs $495 a month on average for 2021 — down from $520 for 2020; for 2021 the state approved an average rate increase of one percent for 2021 individual plans.5

If you qualify for Obamacare subsidies, your monthly premium could be much less. How much you pay also depends on the plan type you choose. Among metal plans, bronze-level coverage usually has the cheapest Idaho health insurance premiums but the highest out-of-pocket costs.

Below are the average monthly premiums for 2021 Idaho health insurance plans:6

Keep in mind that these costs don’t reflect any savings you may qualify for.

Before 2021, if you earned between 100% to 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL), you qualified for subsidies to help you pay for any metal plan.

In 2021, the federal government expanded subsidies and removed the maximum income for premium tax credits. Instead, you’re not expected to pay more than 8.5% of your annual household income for a benchmark plan (the second-cheapest silver plan). The federal government would cover the balance through subsidies.

Check our 2022 subsidy chart and calculator to see which subsidies you might qualify for.

Another way you can save money on Idaho health insurance is through cost-sharing reductions (CSRs). CSRs go toward your out-of-pocket expenses for things like copays and prescription drugs, but only for silver plans. Generally, you must earn between 100% and 250% of the FPL to qualify.8

More than 355,000 Idahoans have Medicaid as of February 2021.9 Idaho is one of the states that have expanded its Medicaid program to low-income residents who earn at below 138% of the FPL.7

You may qualify for Idaho Medicaid if you meet income requirements and you’re either pregnant, a child under 19, the parent or caretaker of a child, 65 or older, or are blind or disabled.

If you make too much to qualify for Medicaid and you have uninsured children in your household under 19 years of age, they may qualify for low-cost coverage through Idaho’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). You might pay just $10 to $15 a month for each enrolled child. Nearly 29,000 residents have CHIP as of February 2021.9

Financial assistance for Marketplace health insurance and eligibility for Medicaid and CHIP are all part of the Idaho Health Coverage Assistance program.10 Before you apply for assistance, it’s recommended that you use the Idaho tax credit estimator to see if your income would qualify you for cost-savings.

To get financial assistance, you must:11

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for seniors 65 and older and younger adults with disabilities. Nearly 345,000 Idahoans enrolled in Medicare as of 2020.14

About 7 out of 10 enrollees get Part A and B through the federal government’s Original Medicare program. The rest get these benefits through private Medicare Advantage plans, which usually include Part D prescription drug coverage.

Private insurers also sell individual Part D drug plans, which are often paired with Original Medicare. As of 2018, more than 126,000 Idahoans have a standalone Part D plan.12

If you choose coverage through Original Medicare, you can also add a Medicare Supplement plan (called Medigap). Idaho (and most states) offers 10 standard Medigap plans that help pay some to all of your covered out-of-pocket costs. These include copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

More than 30,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives call Idaho home, which represents about 1.7% of the state’s total population. If you live in Idaho and you’re a member of a federally-recognized tribe, an American Indian, or an Alaska Native, you could get coverage through Your Health Idaho and pay nothing for out-of-pocket expenses like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. To qualify, your income must be between 100% and 300% of the federal poverty level.

However, if you receive Idaho health insurance benefits through tribal programs, urban Indian programs, or the Purchased and Referred Care program, you won’t pay any out-of-pocket medical expenses regardless of your income.

You also have the option to buy or change your Idaho health coverage at any time throughout the year if you’re part of a federally-recognized tribe.13

Yes. If your Idaho-based business has up to 50 full-time employees, you can apply for coverage with Idaho’s Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) via a certified agent or broker.

To use the Idaho SHOP Marketplace, you must offer coverage to all your eligible full-time employees. However, if you wait to apply after the open enrollment deadline, then at least 70% of eligible employees must enroll in your SHOP plan.

You can choose from five Idaho health insurance companies for 2022 ACA individual and family plans:15

There are six Idaho companies offering small employer ACA health plans for 2022:16
