Not only is IKEA furniture an affordable option for setting up your home but like most other furniture stores, they offer the convenient option of delivering your items right to your doorstep. This means you won’t have to worry about getting the giant bookshelf (albeit disassembled ones) into your tiny Kia Picanto.
If you are happy to spend the additional fee required for delivery, then you should definitely do so. However, you must be aware that not everything you purchase from IKEA can be delivered. I have made a guideline for you to explain just which items you can expect to be delivered, and which cannot.
Suppose you have spent the last half an hour in IKEA deciding which armchair will match your lounge suite but when you finally decide, you realize that it may not fit into your car. There is little need to panic as you will definitely be able to organize the delivery of your purchase if you make the purchase in-store.
You will simply need to find an IKEA employee and ask them to assist you with the process.
You will pay for your purchase like normal at the check-out counter, pay for delivery at the Home Delivery desk, and then you will be able to set a suitable date for the item to be delivered to the required address. It is easy as that!
The only real issue you may face with requesting a delivery is when you place an online order.
Making an online order may seem like an easier option than going in-store. You can easily select your desired products from the comfort of your couch without even needing to put on your shoes. However, the beautiful dining set you saw when you were at your local IKEA may not be available for delivery online.
This does not mean that IKEA just does not have a truck or driver available for deliveries, but rather that particular item is not available.
While the store you think you are getting the item from may have plenty of stock, in actual fact, online orders are filled from IKEA warehouses, which have differing stock amounts. This means that if you saw an item at a particular IKEA branch, there is no guarantee that it is also stocked in the IKEA warehouse, which means you may not be able to have it delivered using the online process.
In such cases, go back to the IKEA where you saw the particular item, and arrange delivery from there.
Another reason that a particular item that you desire cannot be delivered is that the warehouse where that specific item is stocked may be too far away from the required delivery address.
If your home address is out of IKEA’s usual radius, they won’t even try and deliver it from an alternative warehouse.
The time it will take to get there, as well as the fuel costs involved, won’t be covered by the measly delivery fee. It just won’t be worth it for IKEA, so they will not give you the option to have it delivered.
Although there are some valid reasons for IKEA not providing delivery options for some items, sometimes it can merely be a consequence of poor site maintenance.
Something that many customers complain about with IKEA is that their stock availability online is frequently inaccurate. When items are sold (either in-store or from the warehouses), it can take a while for the system to update the stock count and confirm whether an item is available or not
You may try to purchase something that appears to be in stock, but then you may get a notification that it cannot be delivered as it is actually out of stock and, therefore, unavailable for purchase.
This can be super frustrating and inconvenient, so perhaps try to call your local IKEA and ask about their particular availability of an item and purchase it directly from there.
When ordering online, you may be unable to get an item delivered if the stock of that particular piece is low. IKEA will prevent you from ordering a particular item if only a few items are available as the item may be sold out before your order can be filled.
People who had ordered the same item a few days before you could be having their order prepared as you place yours, not allowing time for the system to properly update in time.
Instead of IKEA then having to go through the process of canceling your order and issuing you a refund in these situations, they will simply say that the item is not available for delivery.
It might be very frustrating, but if you are really set on the piece then maybe contact a few of your local IKEA’s and see if they have that item in-store, as that will be a different stock list than the online warehouse. You can then take a trip there to place your order.
With the spontaneous spread of the pandemic, more and more people were forced to not only stay indoors but also work from their homes to limit transmission that may occur as a result of going into the workplace.
Having to spend an increasing amount of time at home and working from a dining room table just wasn’t cutting it for people, so they began to order desks, chairs, and other home office furniture to make a designated workspace.
Additionally, people were also motivated to renovate their homes as they literally had little else to do, so online orders skyrocketed.
However, this increase in online ordering meant that the IKEA warehouse stocks were quickly being depleted. That meant that the IKEA online system was not being updated as quickly as individuals were placing orders, so a lot of people were trying to buy goods that ended up being unavailable for delivery.
While terribly frustrating and totally contradicting the comfort of online ordering, the best solution to the issue of unpredictable delivery is to go into the IKEA store of your choice and place your order physically.
This way, you will always be guaranteed to be able to purchase and deliver the items that are stocked in the store, and unlike with the online system, you will be able to get real-time feedback relating to the stock available in the store.
When you are purchasing an item in-store, you can arrange to get the item delivered right to your house, plus you can even choose same-day delivery (an option exclusive to in-store purchases).
You will simply purchase your desired items at the check-out counters, and then when you are ready, you must find your way to the Home Delivery desk and pay for your items to be delivered to your home address.
You will pay a fee depending on how far your house is from the IKEA store, and how big your parcel is (as certain items can’t fit into the smaller delivery vehicles). You can then go about your day with the peace of mind that your delivery will come soon, often the very next day.
IKEA also offers you the opportunity to track your parcel, so you will know exactly when to expect the arrival of your package using just your order number.
If loading and unloading the item into the car is your concern, then you should know that IKEA employees are happy to assist in loading up your vehicle if the items will fit. Then you just need to get the help of a family member or neighbor for the off-load but at least half your problem is solved and without any additional fees.
