A member of parliament is the person who represents the people in the electoral district. In many countries with bicameral parliaments, this term refers only to members of the lower house. The terms congressman and congresswoman are used in other countries. The term parliamentarian can also be used to refer to unelected government officials with specific roles in a parliament and other expert advisers on parliamentary procedure.

The term is used to describe a member of the legislature who is good at their job and who disagrees on issues, but still cooperates to get things done.
