The life cycle of activities is explained in this document. The life cycle paradigm is described at the beginning of the document. What happens internally while they run and what needs to be implemented during them are explained in the following. The relationship between the state of an activity and the vulnerability of a process that is about to end is briefly presented.

There are several topics related to the transitions between states of an activity addressed.

Managing lifecycles with lifecycle-optimized components and SavingUI states can be found in this information.

The Activity class provides a basic set of six callbacks that can be used to navigate the transitions between stages of an activity's life cycle. When an operation enters a new state, the system invokes each of the callbacks.

Figure 1 shows a representation of this paradigm.

The system calls methods to dismantle the activity when the user leaves. In some cases, this dismantling is only partial; the activity still resides in memory, and can still return to the foreground. If the user comes back to that activity, they will be back where they left off. When running in the background, some apps are restricted from launching activities.

Depending on the state of the activity at that time, the system's probability of ending a given process depends on it.

In memory eviction and activity state, you will learn more about the relationship between state and eviction vulnerability.

Depending on the complexity of your activity, you may not need to implement all of the lifecycle methods.

It's important that you understand each of them and that you implement those that make sure your app behaves as users expect.

The next part of the document gives information about the callbacks you use to handle state transitions.

This section gives information about the methods used during the life cycle of an activity.

The activity's own lifecycle methods are where some of the actions are located. The code that implements the actions of a dependent component must be placed in the component itself.

The dependent component needs to be prioritized over the lifecycle. For more information on how to make components in your dependencies prioritize lifecycles, see Managing lifecycles with lifecycle-optimized components.

When the system first creates the activity, you have to implement this callback. The activity enters the Created state when it is created. In the onCreate method, you execute the application's basic startup logic only once in the lifetime of the activity.

If you implement onCreate, you can bind data to lists, associate the activity with a ViewModel, and instantiate some class scope variables. The savedInstanceState is a bundle object containing the saved state of the activity.

The Bundle object is null if the activity never happened.

If you have a component that is connected to your activity's lifecycle, it will receive the ON_CREATE event. The method that was annotated with the OnLifecycleEvent will be called so that your component that is prioritized lifecycle can do whatever it needs in the creation state.

The following example shows the basic configuration of the activity, such as declaring the user interface, defining the member variables and configuring part of theUI. In this example, the layout file is specified by passing the resource ID from the main activity file.

You can create new View objects in your activity code and create a hierarchy of views if you insert new View objects into a View Group. This layout is used to pass the root View Group to setContentView.

The User Interface documentation gives more information on creating a user interface.

Your activity is not located in the state created. After the onCreate method finishes executing, the activity enters the Started state, and the system quickly calls onStart and onResume methods. The next section explains the onStart.

The system invokes this callback when the activity starts. While the app prepares to bring the activity to the foreground, the onStart call makes the activity visible to the user. This method is where the code that maintains theUI is created.

The ON_START event will be received by any component that links the activity to the lifecycle.

The onStart method completes very quickly, and the activity does not stay in the Started state. The system invokes the onResume method after the activity enters theResumed state.

When the activity enters the resumed state, it comes to the foreground, and then the system invokes the onResume() callback. The app interacts with the user in this state. The app is in this state until something happens that removes focus.

A phone call, navigating to another activity, or the device screen turning off are all possibilities.

The ON_RESUME event will be sent to any component that is linked to the activity when it is resumed. This is where lifecycle components can enable any function that needs to run while the component is visible and in the foreground.

When an interrupt event occurs, the activity enters the Paused state, and the system invokes the onPause() callback.

The system will call the onResume method again if the activity returns to theResumed state. You have to implement onResume and onPause to make sure that the components you launch in onPause are in theResumed state.

When a component receives the ON_RESUME event, it is important that the component prioritize the lifecycle that access the camera.

The above code is used to make the camera work after the ON_RESUME event. In multi-window mode, your activity can be seen even when it's paused. If the user is in multi-window mode and presses the other window that doesn't contain your activity, it will move to the Paused state.

If you want the camera to be active only when the app is in the foreground, you need to make the camera active after ON_RESUME. If you want to keep the camera active while the activity is paused, you need to make sure the camera is turned on after the ON_START event. The Paused state may prevent another app from being able to access the camera in multi-window mode if the camera is active while the activity is paused. Sometimes it is necessary to keep the camera active while the activity is in a paused state.

The overall user experience could be degraded by this. Take control of shared system resources in multi-window mode depends on which part of the lifecycle you are in. Multi-window mode support is more information about this.

Regardless of the event in which you decide to perform an initialization operation, be sure to use the corresponding lifecycle event to release the resource. If you finish any event after the ON_STOP event, you're done. If you make an event after ON_RESUME, release it after ON_PAUSE.

This code can be put directly in activity lifecycle callbacks, but not recommended. Adding this logic to a component that is not a priority allows you to reuse it across multiple activities without duplicating code. The system calls this method as a first indication that the user is leaving your activity (although it doesn't always mean that the user is ending the activity); this indicates that the activity is no longer in the foreground (although it may still be visible if the user is in multi-window mode). If you want to stop operations that should not continue, use the onPause method to do so. There are several reasons why an activity can enter this state. For example:

The ON_PAUSE event will be received by any component that links the activity's lifecycle to it.

This is where lifecycle components can stop any functions that don't need to run while the component is not in the foreground.

The onPause method can be used to free up system resources, sensor drivers, or any other resources that might affect battery life when activity is paused and not needed by the user. If the activity is in multi-window mode, it can be fully visible, even if it is in the Paused state.

If you want to support multi-window mode, you should consider using onStop, instead of onPause, which will free up resources and operations.

The camera that was released after receiving the ON_RESUME event is the same as the camera that was released after receiving the ON_PAUSE event.

The execution of onPause does not allow enough time to perform safe operations. You should not use onPause to save application or user data, make network calls, or execute database transactions as they may not finish before the method finishes.

Heavy load completion operations should be performed during onStop. You can see more information about the operations you can perform during onStop. Saving and resetting activity state can be used for more information on saving data.

The activity does not leave the Paused state if the onPause method is completed.

The activity will remain in that state until it is resumed or completely invisible to the user. If the activity is resumed, the system will invoke the onResumeCallback again. The system will keep the activity in memory and call it again if it returns from the Paused toResumed state. The components that were created during the callback methods that return to the resumed state do not need to be re-created. The system will stop the activity if it becomes completely invisible.

The next section covers the onStop.

When the user can't see your activity, the system invokes the onStop function. This can happen when a new activity is launched. The system can call onStop when the activity is about to end.

The ON_STOP event will be sent to any component that is linked to the activity when it stops. This is where lifecycle components can stop any function that doesn't need to run while the component isn't on the screen.

The onStop method requires the app to release resources that are not needed while it is not visible to the user.

Your app could switch from detailed to more general location updates. When the user is viewing your activity in multi-window mode, you can use onStop().

You should use onStop to perform kill operations. If you can't find a better time to save information to a database, you can use onStop.

The following is an implementation of onStop that saves the contents of a draft note to persistent storage.

The example code uses a database. Room is a persistence library that provides an abstraction layer on top of SQLite.

The activity object is kept in a memory when it is stopped. It is not tied to the window manager and maintains all member and state information. The activity remembers the information when it restarts. You don't need to reinitialize components that were created during the callback methods.

The system keeps track of the current state of each View object in the layout, so if the user enters text into an EditText widget, that content is preserved so you don't need to save or reset it.

If the activity is stopped, the system can kill the process that contains it, so that it can get back into memory. If the user returns to activity, the system will persist the state of View objects in a bundle and reset them if they do not work again. Saving and resetting activity state can be used to learn how to reset an activity.

The activity stops in the stopped state, where it can interact with the user or stop executing.

The system calls onRestart if the activity returns. The system will call onDestroy if the activity is over. The onDestroy() callback is explained in the next section.

The activity ends before onDestroy. The system uses this callback for a few reasons.

The ON_DESTROY event will be sent to any component that links the activity to the lifecycle. The lifecycle components can retrieve items that are needed before the activity ends.

You should use a ViewModel object to hold the data for the activity instead of putting logic in that object. If the activity is to be recreated due to a configuration change, the ViewModel will not need to take any action as it will be persisted and handed over to the next instance of the activity.

If the activity isn't going to be recreated, the ViewModel will have an onCleared method, where you can retrieve data before the activity ends.

The isFinishing method can be used to differentiate these cases.

If the activity is terminated, onDestroy is the final lifecycle callback that the activity receives. If onDestroy is called as a result of a configuration change, the system immediately creates a new activity instance and then calls onCreate on that new instance.

All resources that have not yet been freed by previous calls must be freed by the onDestroy() callback.

The system kills processes when it needs to free up RAM, and the probability that it will end a process depends on the state of the process at that time.

The state of the process depends on the activity running in the process. The correlation between the state of the process, the state of the activity, and the probability that the system will end the process is shown in Table 1.

The relationship between the process life cycle and the state of the activity is shown in Table 1.

The system doesn't end an activity directly to memory. It terminates the process in which the activity is running to kill not only the activity, but also everything running in the process. Saving and restoring the state of an activity is a way to learn how to preserve and restore theUI state of an activity.

This section describes the instance state and how to use the onSaveInstance method.

If yourUI data is simple and lightweight, such as a primitive data type or a simple object, you can use onSaveInstanceState to maintain the state on both the configuration changes and the completion of theUI. In most cases, you should use both ViewModel and onSaveInstanceState, since onSaveInstanceState has serialization and deserialization costs.

When the user presses the back button or calls the finish method, your activity ends due to normal app behavior. When the user presses Back or the Activity ends itself, the concept of that Activity instance is lost to the system.

The user's expectations match the behavior of the system and you have no work to do.

If the system terminates the Activity due to constraints, the system remembers that it existed, even though the actual Activity instance has vanished.

The system creates a new instance of the activity if the user attempts to return to it.

The saved data that the system uses to restore the previous state is called the instance state, and is a set of key-value pairs stored in a bundle object. The system uses an instance state bundle to store information for View objects in your activity layout.

If your activity is re-instantiated, the layout state will be reset to its previous state without you having to write any code. Your activity may have other state information that you want to reset, such as member variables that track the user's progress in the activity.

The view state of your activity must have a unique ID provided by the android:id attribute in order for the system to reset it.

A bundle object is not suitable for preserving more than a small amount of data because it consumes system process memory and requires serialization on the main thread.

You should combine the methods onSaveStateInstance and ViewModel to preserve more than a small amount of data.

The onSaveInstanceState method is called when your activity starts to stall so that you can save state information. Transient information about the state of the activity's view hierarchy can be found in the text of an EditText or List View widget.

If your activity ends unexpectedly, you should add a bundle object to the activity instance that contains additional information about it. If you want the default implementation to save the state of the view hierarchy, you must call the superclass implementation. For example,

When the user explicitly closes the activity, onSaveInstanceState is not called.

When your activity is in the foreground, you must take advantage of the appropriate opportunities to save persistent data, such as user preferences. You should save that data if there is no chance of it happening.
