Lake George, one of the best places to enjoy the State of New York The Thousand Islands is one of the most interesting places to visit in upstate New York. This archipelago contains more than a thousand islands: 1,864 to be exact. The islands vary in size and sit on the St. Lawrence River, which straddles the border between New York and Ontario, Canada. If you want to see the best that this state has to offer, here are 15 essential places to see in the State of New York.

Maybe you want to enjoy a mountain getaway, or maybe you're looking for a hiking trail to some of New York's lesser-known waterfalls. Whatever it is, I'm sure you'll find it difficult to decide among so many varieties. With 12 waterfalls and 15 kilometers of hiking trails, Robert H. Treman State Park is another historic place in New York State that I recommend you visit. This beautiful spot is close to Watkins Glen and Taughannock Falls State Parks, so if you need another reason to visit the Finger Lakes region, here it is. Two of the most famous in the park are the 115-foot, multi-tiered Lucifer Falls and the Lower Falls, the base of which serves as a refreshing swimming hole. The 3-kilometer Gorge Trail leads from the park's east entrance to the Lower Falls. From here you can continue along the Gorge Trail and link up with the Rim Trail, creating an approximately 5-mile loop trail that will give you two different views of Lucifer Falls.

I highly recommend both hiking trails as they are two of the best outdoor activities in New York State. The best way to witness this incredible natural wonder is by doing one of the hiking trails. The Gorge Trail is less than a mile long, and will take you past the Lower Falls to end at the base of Taughannock Falls.

The North Rim Trail is about twice as long and offers views of the Upper Falls and Taughannock Falls. Watkins Glen State Park is another beautiful place in the Finger Lakes region, in the town of Watkins Glen. It is an impressive state park, especially if you visit during the spring. In addition to the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, you must visit the Saratoga Spa State Park. This is where many of the city's eponymous mineral springs are located, as well as a hotel and swimming pool complex. There are also several amazing hikes including the Gideon Putnam Trail, the Five Mile Trail, and the Geyser Loop.

The latter takes you to Geyser Creek, where you can see the Geyser Island Spouter. While not technically a geyser, it is still an impressive spring that shoots water up to 5 meters into the air. With its fresh mountain air and majestic snow-capped peaks, Lake Placid is a must-see historic place in New York State. That said, the Adirondacks surrounding Lake Placid are also worth a visit. While you're here, head to one of the wineries, ADK Treetop Adventures ropes course, or High Falls Gorge, a nature park with hiking trails past waterfalls, rapids, and the AuSable River.

In addition to hiking and enjoying nature, you can also camp or swim along the shores of Cayuga Lake here. Sledding, cross-country skiing, and ice skating are also popular winter activities. As I mentioned, the state park is close to Ithaca, so you can also take advantage of all the things there are to do there.

If you don't want to bathe in a natural spring, you can visit one of the many luxury spas in the city. Downtown Saratoga Springs is filled with salons, spas, shops, and museums, and is a popular destination for the performing arts. Like Watkins Glen, there are waterfalls here, and while there aren't as many, they are bigger. The three main waterfalls are the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls, which originate from the Genesee River. You can find all three in the southern part of the park, in Portage Canyon.

The Middle Falls are the tallest, at 33 meters. Nature lovers will also enjoy the area's wealth of parks and places to hike. For example, the Lakes Trail branches off into secondary trails, and Buttermilk Falls State Park has ten waterfalls, including its namesake waterfall, as well as a beach, campground, ball fields, and nature trails. Nearby are Robert H. Treman and Taughannock Falls State Parks, two other famous places in New York State that I'll talk about later. You won't want to miss the hiking trails and lookout points, as they offer some of the best views in New York State. There are more than 95 kilometers of hiking trails, and among the lookouts, I recommend the Inspiration Point Overlook, which is approximately 8 kilometers from the visitor center.
