Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body.
Your blood pressure normally rises and falls throughout the day.
Blood pressure is measured using two numbers:
The first number, called systolic blood pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats.
The second number, called diastolic blood pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats.
If the measurement reads 120 systolic and 80 diastolic, you would say, “120 over 80,” or write, “120/80 mmHg.”
A normal blood pressure level is less than 120/80 mmHg.1
No matter your age, you can take steps each day to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range.
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is blood pressure that is higher than normal. Your blood pressure changes throughout the day based on your activities. Having blood pressure measures consistently above normal may result in a diagnosis of high blood pressure (or hypertension).
The higher your blood pressure levels, the more risk you have for other health problems, such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
Your health care team can diagnose high blood pressure and make treatment decisions by reviewing your systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels and comparing them to levels found in certain guidelines.

A dedicated scanner device that projects a beam of light onto the form paper is a traditional OMR device. The marked areas are detected by contrasting the reflectivity of the page with the blank areas of the paper.
A mark on each side of the paper will reduce the amount of light passing through the paper.
The desktop OMR software allows the user to create their own forms in a word processor and then print them on a laser printer. The OMR software can be used to process completed forms by using a document feeder and a common desktop image scanner.
A complicated pattern recognition engine is not required for OMR, which is a difference from optical character recognition. There is little chance that the marks will not be read correctly. The image needs to have high contrast and be easy to recognize.
barcode recognition is a field related to OMR and OCR.
The use of optical answer sheets with pencil bubbles is one of the best known applications of optical mark recognition.
There are multiple-choice question exams in Europe. Students mark their answers with circles on a pre-printed sheet. The sheet is automatically categorized by the machine. In the United States and most European countries, a horizontal or vertical "mark" on a rectangular "pill" is the most commonly used type of OMR shape; the best known application in the UK is the UK National Lottery form. Pill marks are a later technology and have the advantage of being easier to mark and to erase.
Early OMR machines that were so sensitive that a big mark was needed for reliability carried over technology that was so small. A special marker is used to complete an optical answer sheet in most Asian countries.
Students mark answers or other information by darkening the circles on a pre-printed sheet. The sheet is sorted by the machine.
People filling out forms is one of the things that OMR applications involve. These forms are designed so that ambiguity is kept to a minimum. OMR is a popular method of counting votes due to its low error rate, low cost, and ease of use.
OMR marks are added to physical mail items to make it easier to use. The marks are added to each page of a mail document and are used to determine when the mail should be folded and then inserted into an envelope.
Multiple-choice exams use an optical answer sheet or bubble sheet as a question form. Optical mark recognition can detect responses. The Scantron Corporation is the best known company in the United States for their optical answer sheets.
The answer sheets have a set of blank boxes that correspond to the questions. Each series of filled ovals will return a certain value when read, thanks to the barcode technology. Student responses can be recorded or identified.
The first optical answer sheets were read by shining a light through the sheet and using phototubes to measure how much light was blocked.
Blue ink reflects and emits blue light, so blue pens could not be used. Number two pencils had to be used to fill in the bubbles because of the opaque substance called graphite.
Light and darkness are measured in optical answer sheets. It's not necessary to fill them in with a number two pencil, since it's recommended over other types.
Many systems will ignore marks that are the same color as the form is printed in, but black ink will be read. The double-sided optical answer sheets will not interfere with the readings of the sun.
If the oval is almost full, the system will detect it as filled, even if it is inaccurately filled.
The answer sheets may be printed wrong so that all the ovals are filled.
The outline of the ovals can be too thick or irregular. In Georgia's Gwinnett County, over 19,000 Absentee Ballots were discovered after 10,000 had already been returned. The slight difference was not apparent to the naked eye until a test was conducted in October. The ballots had to be transferred to the correct ones by the kidnapped board of elections workers under close observation by members of the Democratic and Republican political parties.
The transfer could not happen before Election Day.
OMR software can be used on a desktop computer to process surveys, exams, timesheets, and other plain paper forms printed on a laser printer, using an image scanner.
The data from the OMR sheets is captured with OMR software. Data capture scanning devices focus on factors such as OMR sheet paper dimensions.
The Remark Office OMR was manufactured by Gravic, Inc. The Observation Office OMR 1.0 was released in 1991.
The need for OMR software arose because early optical mark recognition systems used dedicated scanning and pre-printed forms with missing colors and registration marks. The forms cost between $0.10 and $0.19 per page. Users of OMR software can save thousands of dollars on a large number of forms by designating their own forms with a word processor or built-in form editor, printing them locally on a printer, and using a form editor.

Since the late 1980s, many form processing companies have offered optical mark identification in a form. A black and white (bitonal) image can look like a legitimate mark if extraneous marks are removed with a min and max count. When a user changes their mind, the method can cause problems, so some products started using a different method to identify the intent of the marker.
OMR marks are added to mail documents so that they can be scanned.
Funasset is a British developer of O MR software. The user can set up and select an OMR sequence and then apply OMR marks to mailed documents prior to printing.
Some OMR software is free or open source.
The presence or absence of a mark is detected by using optical mark recognition. Several other technologies have evolved into optical mark recognition. Inventions for machines that would assist the blind were granted in the early 19th century.
OMR is used for data entry. Two early forms of OMR are paper tape and punch cards which use actual holes in the middle instead of pencil filled circles in the middle.
The telegraph used paper tape as an input device in the early 19th century. In 1890, punch cards were used as input devices for computers. The use of punch cards declined in the early 1970s as personal computers were introduced. The presence of a bubble-filled pencil can be recognized using an optical scanner.
The IBM Test Scoring Machine was the first to detect marks by using pairs of wire brushes to detect the electrical conductivity of the lead.
In the 1930s, Richard Warren at IBM was experimenting with optical mark detection systems for evidence scoring. In 1935, it was awarded. The first successful optical mark detection scanner was developed by Lindquist. Lindquist needed a better test scoring machine than the standard IBM 805.
The Measurement Research Center held Lindquist's patents until 1968, when the University of Iowa sold the operation.
IBM developed a successful optical mark sense test scoring machine during the same period. IBM marketed it as the IBM 1230 optical scoring reader.
IBM was able to migrate a wide variety of applications developed for its mark detection machines to the new optical technology thanks to this and a variety of related machines. The dimensions of a standard punch card were used in most of the applications, including inventory management and problem reporting forms.
Scantron Corporation, founded in 1972, was a different type of player in the educational testing field, as it would distribute inexpensive scanning to schools and make a profit on the test forms.
Many people came to think of all forms of sense-mark as forms of scanning machines. Scantron is a subsidiary of M&F Worldwide and provides test and evaluation systems and services, as well as data collection and analysis services.
National Computer Systems acquired Westinghouse Learning Corporation in 1983. Pearson Education acquired NCS in 2000 and formed the core of their data management group. Pearson's data management group was bought by M&F Worldwide in February 2008. 17
Many situations have been used with OMR. The use of OMR in inventory systems was a transition from punch cards to barcodes and is not used as much. OMR is used for surveys and tests.
Many companies and healthcare agencies use OMR to streamline their data entry processes and reduce entry errors. Data from paper forms can be collected with the help of OMR, ICR, and OCR technologies.
OMR can be performed using a scanning device. There is a new entry in the series.
There are many other applications for OMR.
