There are many brands of filters, including neutral density filters. In order to resolve doubts and facilitate the choice, you have to take into account some aspects of this article.

The first thing you need to know is what it is. A neutral density filter is a dark glass that is placed in front of a lens and subtracts light.

If we are always looking for light, why would we want to subtract light? The exposure time of the photograph is extended by using neutral density filters. In this way, moving subjects may appear blurry or even disappear.

How many stops do I need to purchase the neutral density filter? I have two square filters from Formatt-Hitech that are a 6-stop for low light conditions, such as when the sun has gone down or I want to extend the exposure by just one or two seconds.

Let's talk about the types of filters there are. Square and circular are the two types. I think the choice of type is just as important as the number of steps to subtract.

Circular filters aren't practical.

If you want to try this type of photography and you don't want to spend a lot, they are ideal, but the problem is that you need it to be of a certain diameter for the lens you will use. You will have to buy several if you have different objectives.

If you want to buy rings that adapt from one diameter to another, my advice is to buy the one with the largest diameter.

The most important problem is that once the filter is screwed on you won't be able to see through the viewfinder. This means that you have to have everything ready before you do it. You have to adjust and change if you have to. If you do this many times you will lose the photo or you will get tired of doing it and leave the filter at home.

The Live View or direct view screen is the only way to avoid removing the filter. In this case, it is usually seen, but it uses up the battery and the camera is not always able to focus.

The variable density filters are within the circular filters. The truth is that I have not tried any, but I have read that the filters are not worth it since they create halos in the photos.

I always recommend this type of filter. It's true that you have to have a filter holder to use it, but it's very cheap now. I use a LEE filter holder. The filter holder needs a ring that screws onto the lens.
