Yu-Gi-Oh! has several boss monsters which define the game. From cards like Apoqliphort Towers to the game-ending Accesscode Talker, there are some monsters that just change the way the game is played. These monsters demand answers that you might not always want to play, but are forced to play in order to survive.
One such monster is the iconic Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon. Untargetable and unable to be destroyed by card effects, this fusion of Yugi Muto and Joey Wheeler’s ace monsters is able to strike fear into anyone who faces it. Not only is it so difficult to get rid of, but it can also destroy your opponent’s monsters to deal life-point damage. To top it all off, it can negate an opponent’s card effect once per turn and boost its considerable attack points at the same time.
So, how do you get rid of this powerful boss monster? Since it’s being played more and more often in Branded decklists, we’ve brought you some strategies to get rid of this almost unkillable monster.
While Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon can’t be targeted or destroyed, there’s nothing that says it can’t be tributed. This mighty boss monster is still vulnerable to being tributed. Because tributes aren’t activated effects, Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon can’t negate the tribute and can be removed by cards that tribute your opponent’s monsters.
Things like Lava Golem, which was used by Yami Marik in the Battle City arc, can tribute your opponent’s monsters to summon themselves to your opponent’s field. The cards most famous for being able to do this are the Kaiju monsters, Lava Golem itself, and of course, the Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode. You can even use Nibiru, the Primal Being to tribute all your opponent’s monsters at once. Having these in your arsenal means you can get rid of your opponent’s boss monster without having to engage with it at all.
While this monster can’t be destroyed or targeted, there are many cards that can remove these boss monsters from the field without destroying them or targeting them. Cards like Evenly Matched banish cards from your opponent’s field face-down. This card doesn’t destroy or target, making it a perfect way to get rid of Dragoon.
Other cards such as Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon and the Kashtira cards can also banish monsters, which makes them relatively simple ways to get rid of Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon as well.
There are other ways to remove it from the field besides banishing it. Cards that send monsters back to the hand also have a unique interaction with monsters summoned from the extra deck. If these monsters are sent back to the hand, they will instead return to the extra deck, meaning your opponent will have to spend resources summoning it again.
One of the simplest ways to get rid of this particular boss monster is to destroy it in battle. While it has protection from destruction by card effects, it can still be destroyed in battle. If you can summon a monster with higher attack points than Dragoon, then all you need to do is enter your battle phase and attack it.
If you plan to destroy it in battle, though, make sure you take its negation effect into account. If Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon negates anything, its effect will boost its already strong 3000 attack points by 1000 points. This boost isn’t temporary, and it will stack every time Dragoon uses its effect. If you want to destroy it in battle, you might need to make sure it doesn’t have a chance to boost its attack too far for you to attack.
While each of these methods to beat Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon has its merits, there is no one best way to stop this behemoth. You need to choose the method that works best for your deck and that you think will allow you to beat it most consistently.
