Although he was not a member of any Sufism group, he fell in love with religious readings. If his claims were true, he discovered a lot of books about prophets and saints, and for forty years he collected anecdotes from Sufis in his work Memorial of the Saints (Tadhkirat al-awliya).

These biographies, largely based on Arabic sources, bring together in a uniform scheme a series of facts, miracles and virtues of the character, episodes of his conversion and sayings or sentences attributed to him, and therefore present a picture of exceptional freshness of Muslim medieval spirituality and the material environment within which it unfolded. The pure and simple language of this work makes it worthy of being compared to the modern Persian poetic and prose production, which uses bombast. There are flowers of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The two main mystical poems by Farid al-Din Attar: The Language of Birds and Divine Book are a result of a successful narrative inspiration. The story contained in the approximately 4600 verses of The Language of the Birds (Mantiq al-tayr) begins with an assembly of birds that decide to go in search of the mythical Simurgh, a species of mysterious bird sung in the Iranian epic that in this allegory symbolizes the divinity sought by the human soul.

The Koran assigns the role of messenger in the love affair between Solomon and the Queen of Sheba to the hoopoe, which the birds chose as their guide. Many birds try to avoid the journey because of earthly obstacles and distraction of the soul, but the hoopoe encourages them to begin the journey. After the defection of the weak, the rest begin the journey and eventually find the Simurgh, in which they recognize the deepest essence of themselves.

The Language of the Birds is a transparent plot that serves the poet to symbolize mystical truths, not without the smiling and sometimes malicious grace of the psychologist and artist making the scheme flourish from the charming anecdotes, disputes and descriptions. The Language of the Birds is considered to be one of the most important poetic texts of Sufism, thanks to the French edition and translation by Garcin de Tassy.

Less allegorical and more directly moralizing is the Divine Book (Ilahi name), a mystical poem made up of a series of tales and apologists enclosed in a unifying framework: a sovereign invites his children to express their desire for what each would like to possess, and all of them ask for worldly goods, such as the daughter of the Peris, magic, King Gemshid's miraculous cup (within which the whole world is reflected), the water of life, Solomon's ring, alchemy. The father tells them numerous stories, anecdotes and edifying episodes aimed at demonstrating the dangerous vanity of their desires, and at revealing how the deepest essence of the desired things is recognized as having a spiritual value: the daughter of the Peris is actually the soul; Gemshid's cup, intelligence; the water of life is faith, etc.
