If you are working age or in a couple where both are working age, you are no longer able to make a new claim for income based Jobseeker's Allowance. In most cases, if you want to make a new claim, you will need to claim Universal Credit instead. You may also need to claim Universal Credit if you experience a change in circumstances.

If you are a mixed age couple (one is working age and one is pension age), if you are not receiving Pension Credit and you want to make a new claim, you will need to claim Universal Credit. For further information see our 'mixed age couples' help page.

Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) is a benefit paid to people who are not working (or only working part-time) and who are actively seeking work. There are 2 types of JSA: contribution-based and income-based. Contribution-based JSA is paid for up to 6 months, but only if you paid enough Class 1 National Insurance contributions when you were working. You can get it even if your partner works or if you have savings. The calculator will work out if you are entitled to contribution-based JSA. Income-based JSA is payable if you have not paid enough Class 1 National Insurance contributions, were self-employed or when your contribution-based JSA stops. It can also top-up contribution-based JSA in some cases. It can be paid for as long as you keep meeting the rules for it. If you receive JSA (income-based) you may be able to get help with the cost of your mortgage, home loan or rent. If you qualify for help with these housing costs the calculator includes the full amount of any help that you are entitled to (though there may in fact be a 'waiting period' at the start of your claim for the housing costs help). You can no longer make a new claim for JSA (income-based). The calculator will work out if you are entitled to contribution-based JSA.

The first class of graduates from the Icesi Law program is led by Jorge Andrés Saavedra Bedoya. He started in the Economics and International Business program, but later changed to Business Administration. He is the Manager of the Parque Central Free Trade Zone in Cartagena and he practices law on foreign trade, customs and free trade agreements. We talked with the man about his experiences at the University and what he thought about it.

Why does an economist choose the path of law?

When I graduated from high school, I considered law as a possibility, but my family had been lawyers, so I decided to study something different. The example of my parents made me change my mind, I liked how they spoke to people and I admired their knowledge of the law. I helped my father in his law firm, he had very famous and controversial trials in the city. I always had that curiosity about the profession, for this reason, once they opened the degree at the University I said to myself, "Why not also study Law? - It would be a very good complement with Economics and International Business, a lawyer with knowledge of Economics After thinking about it, I went to the office of Lelio Fernández, who at that time was Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, and I told him: "I want to enter a Law degree without stopping studying Economics, is that possible?

He told me at the end of the meeting that I was the first student and that I had a lot of career options. "Welcome!"

What was the most important lesson that you learned at Icesi?

The most important thing about Icesi University is that it awakened in me the desire for business, healthy ambition, entrepreneurship, losing the fear of failure, the desire to be independent, to be a different professional with added values, the curiosity for knowledge, to discern and most important of all, to not lose humility.

I met people with good ideas and a desire to eat the world. We competed healthy to be the best and taking time for everything, study, parties and talks. The University was small, we all knew each other and the lectures were in the square of the saman. Tell us a bit about your work.

How does your job as a lawyer affect your daily life?

The Parque Central Free Trade Zone is managed by me in Cartagena. My wife and brother-in-law and I have other independent projects that we have developed together in Cali.

A foreign trade advisory company is a logistics operator. I entered the world of foreign trade because of law. Customs Law is complex and not many know about it. There are immediate solutions that are needed.

Imagine the raw materials of an industry stuck in a port because of a customs dispute, what a mess! But, thanks to my principles and foundations in Law granted by the University, I found a niche of knowledge little explored by lawyers which I found self-taught, without taking specialized courses (I finally understood active learning, learning to learn), and I took it to the subject of free zones, which is very popular today in Colombia and in the world, with few legal professionals who are experts in the matter. The Law gave me knowledge, the ability to learn quickly and adapt to changes, and the Administration gave me the method to run an organization and generate ventures.
