A quality of a population is called a parameter.The quality of a sample is called a statistics.The formula for a t-test includes the mean and standard deviation.We assume that they are representative of the population because we calculate these for the sample.

The Mann Whitney U test does not involve the mean or sd.

A quantity of a distribution is described by aParameter.The Mean is a part of the Normal distribution.The Normal, Mean and Standard Distribution can only be described with a sufficient set of parameters.Danny.
