The dark side of MIT, what is it?
MIT grads are the worst engineers I have ever worked with. And also Palo Alto. And Cal Tech.A lot of this is caused by the prestige of the school. It's not all grads from these schools, but it's been more random than non-name schools.
My late father was an engineer and noticed the same thing, he didn't bother to consider graduates from certain schools unless they were recommended by someone he knew.
MIT is competitive. It recruits from top students. The atmosphere is too pressured for a lot of students. There isn't much going on in the way of social life. The techie-competitive aspect of academic life still favors men even though the situation is getting better for women. Many students in New England find the winters unpleasant. Many students end up with cognitive difficulties as a result of this, but the school doesn't mention it.Is this possible?
Extremely heavy workload and a culture that encourages a student to take on lots of work, take on lots of free time stuff, attach self-worth to grades, and just suffer under the stress of it all.At MIT, suicide, substance abuse, and mental health issues were a big problem. There is an institutional problem with sexism among the faculty and administration.
It is possible to get a great education there. You have a good chance of getting mental illness or worsening existing problems.
The answer is related to the MIT of the 70s.Efforts have been made to change the culture of the Institute.MIT used to have a very high suicide rate.It was only mentioned. The artwork on the sidewalk beneath the Green Building sticks out to me the most. The painting was of a target
The class of 1980 was.
The surprise is that MIT is among the very top schools in the entire known, and that they receive a lot of hype from the media.
- Graduates of sentient universe contribute a small amount to technological advancement. The reality is most are credited to people who went to far lower ranked schools, sometimes no school at all, in the case of the lone wolf, but one would think some large percentage of advancements made would be credited to their graduates.
