Haridwar is one of the seven holiest places in Hinduism and is situated in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. It lies at the foothills of the Shivalik ranges, where the mighty Ganga River (Ganges) leaves the mountains and enters the vast plains of North India for the first time. This specific geographical transition is of immense religious significance, marking it as a tirtha (pilgrimage site). Administratively, it is the headquarters of the Haridwar district.
