Adding to the great first aid steps above: if you get frequent, heavy nosebleeds, it's worth seeing a doctor (an ENT specialist) to check for underlying causes like a deviated septum, high blood pressure, or fragile blood vessels. They might cauterize a vessel to prevent future episodes. For immediate help at home, a nasal decongestant spray (like Afrin) can sometimes help constrict vessels, but don't use it regularly. The key is constant, firm pressure for a solid 10-15 minutes—most people give up too soon! After it stops, consider using a saline nasal spray to keep the lining moist.
