The concept of five elements varies by culture. In Western classical philosophy, particularly from the time of Aristotle, the elements are Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Aether. Aether was considered the divine or heavenly substance beyond the terrestrial world. Interestingly, in Chinese philosophy, the five elements (Wu Xing) are different: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
