Checking your engine oil is a vital, simple maintenance task. Here's how to do it correctly:

What You Need: A clean rag or paper towel. The engine should be warm but off (wait 5-10 minutes after driving so the oil can drain back into the pan).

Steps: 1. Park on Level Ground: Ensure your car is parked on a flat surface for an accurate reading. 2. Pop the Hood: Find the hood release lever inside your car (usually near the driver's door), then go to the front and release the safety latch to open the hood fully. 3. Locate the Dipstick: Find the engine oil dipstick. It usually has a bright yellow or orange handle labeled "Engine Oil" or with an oil can symbol. 4. Pull, Wipe, Re-insert, Pull Again: Pull the dipstick all the way out. Wipe it clean with your rag. Fully re-insert it back into its tube. Now, pull it out again for the true reading. 5. Read the Level: Look at the end of the dipstick. You'll see two marks: "MIN" (or Low) and "MAX" (or Full), or sometimes crosshatched lines. The oil should be between these two marks. Ideally, it should be at or near the MAX mark. 6. Check Oil Condition: Rub a little oil between your fingers. It should be amber or light brown and smooth. If it's gritty, very dark black, or has a milky look, it's time for a change or indicates a problem.

If Low: Add a small amount (like half a quart) of the recommended oil type (check your owner's manual) through the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Wait a minute, then re-check. Don't overfill!

Your car's manual has the exact procedure and recommended oil type.
