The British government made the Rowlatt Act in India. This was in 1919. They were worried about the Indian people. Many people wanted freedom from British rule. During World War I, the government had special emergency powers. But the war was over, so these powers were going to end.

The British wanted to keep control. They were scared of protests and revolution. So, they passed the Rowlatt Act. This law was very strict. It let the police arrest anyone they thought was a troublemaker. They could put people in jail for two years. And there was no trial. It was a way to stop the independence movement and control the people. It took away their basic rights.
