Durg is a city located in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It is part of the Durg-Bhilai urban agglomeration, which is one of the largest and most important industrial regions in the state. Geographically, Durg lies on the Chhattisgarh Plain, on the banks of the Sheonath River. It is situated approximately 25 kilometers (about 15.5 miles) west of the state capital, Raipur. This proximity to the capital makes it a significant satellite city. The city is a major administrative center, serving as the headquarters of the Durg District. Its location in the "Rice Bowl of India" places it in a fertile agricultural region, but it is perhaps best known for its industrial might, being the home of the giant Bhilai Steel Plant, one of the largest steel plants in India, which is located in the neighboring city of Bhilai.
