From what I've seen in the trailers and early gameplay, the character switching is instant and seems to be a core part of the strategy, just like in the old Budokai Tenkaichi 3. You build a team and can swap them in and out to continue combos or to save a character with low health. The specific button hasn't been officially confirmed in a control scheme yet, but it's almost certainly mapped to a shoulder button for quick access during frantic fights.
