What is al in psle?
In March 2018, calls for the removal of the PSLE was rejected in parliament by then Education Minister (Schools) Ng Chee Meng, who cited it as a "useful checkpoint" in a child's education journey. On 28 September 2018, Education Minister Ong Ye Kung reiterated his stance on keeping the The ministry will remove several mid-year and year-end exams across the board from primary one up to secondary four with the aim of reducing assessments based on exam results and to encourage students to be all rounders.
The British Eleven plus exam was first conducted in 1960 and the Primary School Leaving Examination was modeled after it. In 2015, 39,286 students sat for the PSLE. The Ministry of Education said that 98% of the students were eligible for secondary school.
The Express stream was qualified for 66.2% of the pupils. The 1.7% who did not qualify for the three streams were offered the choice of taking the exam again or going to a specialized school.
The 2005 mathematics paper was flawed because of a question that had no definite method of working the answer out. The "question 13" was spotted by many and became famous.
One set of answers will be given when worked out one way and another set of answers will be given when worked out by a different method, according to the question. The Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) acknowledged the mistake a few days after the examination and awarded 2 marks to every student for the question.

The posting system does not allow students to attend other schools. Direct School Admission (DSA) is available for some of the top schools. Some can attend other schools such as Singapore Sports School, NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, or the School of the Arts and School of Science and Technology.
The Direct School Admission scheme allows independent schools to admit 20% and 10% of their students. The students get notice of their results after the exercises are over in August.
The Integrated Program can be taken in by as many students as they want. The Ministry of Education has given permission for other schools to take in students who are interested in the schools' niche areas up to a maximum of 5% of their total student intake.
Since 2004, two international schools have been given licenses to operate by the Ministry of Education, which has compulsory practices such as playing the national anthem and bilingual policies, to allow Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident students to enter without the ministry's permission. The permission to start the school year in January 2005 was granted in April 2004.
The Anglo- Chinese School and Hwa Chong International School are the same school. Saint Joseph's International School was granted permission to set up a school similar to the original two in 2006 and offers a similar program to the one offered by ACS.
The Singapore Sports School is for students who excel in sports. This includes swimming, badminton, table tennis, soccer, golf, track and field, and sailing. The school opened in January 2004 and takes students directly into the school if they have an active background in the sports offered by the school. Many students who were judged to excel in their sport but were not posted to the Normal stream were applied to the school.
The school wanted pupils who excelled both physically and academically, so they rejected them. The school was criticized for being too result wise and not grooming them into sports people. After that, some of the students were accepted on an appeal basis. The International Baccalaureate paper is similar to the Singapore School of the Arts.
The NUS High School of Mathematics and Science opened in 2005 with an intake of 225 Secondary 1 and 3 students, offering a six-year program leading to the NUS HighDiploma. The SAT and AP exams will be taken in the senior years for admission into foreign universities. The school offers an accelerated mathematics and science curriculum based on a modular system, as well as other optional subjects integrated into it. Performance in an application form, interviews, tests, and an admission camp are some of the factors used to decide if a student is admitted.

The T-score system differentiates students very finely. A student who has a T-score of 231 and a student who has a T-score of 230 could be equally prepared for secondary school.

There will only be 29 possible PSLE scores, down from 200 today. The new system will mean that students will be less differentiated.

The T-score shows how a student has done. If most of his peers perform better than him, he will get a lower T-score.
A student will be graded on his own performance regardless of how his peers have performed.
The standards will not change in the year to year. A child who gets AL5 in 2021 will have the same levels of achievement as a child who gets it in 2022.
Students can focus on their own learning, instead of trying to outdo others.
How will the changes to the PSLE reduce stress?
Help children focus on learning.
The new scoring system will show the child how well he has learned, not how well he has done in comparison to his peers.
Students are not differentiated on the basis of every mark if they are moved to ALs. Students who demonstrate the same achievement in a subject will receive the same award.
Students will be able to choose from a wider range of schools if the schools with similar academic profiles are less differentiated by cut off points.
Parents think that only a specific school can help their child do well, and this can cause excessive stress. No matter what the child's PSLE Score or interests are, there will be many good schools to choose from.
Parents, teachers, and society need to help our children find the right balance between doing their best academically and pursuing other interests, which will help develop them into more well-rounded individuals.
Why are there so many?
This gives a good balance.
The 8 ALs are designed to reflect different levels of achievement. We need a broad indication of their progress after 6 years of primary school so that they can be matched to suitable academic programs in secondary school.
There is a difference between a student who scores 65 and another who scores 66 in a subject, and there is also a difference between a student who scores 75 and another who scores 65.
We want to be able to notice the difference.
More students with the same PSLE Score would vote in S1 posting if there are too few ALs.
It would cause more anxiety for parents.
There is a good balance with 8 ALs.
Why are the reference marks not evenly distributed?
They give a sense of differentiation.
The reference mark ranges are based on the learning objectives.
They give educationally meaningful differentiation of students to allow schools to better guide the students' secondary school journey.
The PSLE is designated so that students can show what they can do and a large majority of students do well for it, that the upper ranges are narrower.
Half of the students will score a 4 or better.
At the middle to lower ALs, a good indication of a student's progress can be found by widening the raw mark ranges.
Is the 8ALs derived from the current letter grades?
This is a new scoring system.
The current letter grades are not related to the new ALs.
The student's performance in a subject is reflected in the AL.
The academic expectations for each ALL are based on the learning objectives.
Doesn't choice matter in S1 posting?
Choice will matter more.
S1 posting takes into account a student's choice of schools, as each student will be posted to his most preferred school for which he is eligible. The order in which they place a school does not give priority to students with the same T-score Aggregate.
This will change with choice order being a new tie-breaker.
If two students with the same PSLE Score place the same school higher up in its list of choices, the student with the higher score will have priority in the admissions process. Academic merit is still the main factor in posting students.

Look at the different parts of the school to find the right fit for your child.
Discuss options with your child.
Take some time to think about your child's strengths and interests.
The cut-off points of the schools are not the only places to look. Consider a school's ethos, culture, programs, and distance from your home.
