LONDON (Reuters) - Telecoms giant BT has moved into the plastic card market, with a credit card that reduces users’ telephone and broadband bills.

The cards will be linked to customers’ phone and broadband accounts: every time they use the cards to make a purchase, they will automatically receive money off their BT bill.

For the first 250 pounds of spending per month, customers will receive a discount of one penny for every two pounds-worth of purchases. Spending above 250 pounds will earn double the discount -- one penny for every pound spent.

Cardholders will be able to earn a discount of up to 75 pounds per year, with 150 pounds-worth of savings if more than one BT credit card account holder lives at the same address.

Developed following consultation with customers, who said they wanted a reward scheme without having to redeem points or vouchers, the card also has a competitive interest rate.

It offers interest-free credit on balance transfers for 12 months and 0 percent on purchases for three months.

Those who transfer a balance will be charged a fee of 3 percent of the amount.

The interest rate will revert to a typical annual percentage rate of 16.9 percent.

Gavin Patterson, consumer managing director at BT Retail, said the card would be an “obvious choice for millions of BT customers”.

The BT credit card, available in silver, pink, black and green, will be issued by MBNA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bank of America.

Karen Darby, founder of price comparison service SimplySwitch.com, said it was an “innovative” move, which took the bundling of services “to a whole new level”.

“It is quite rare to find any reward scheme operating on a card with 0 percent balance transfers,” she said.

“This is a strong indication that BT’s pushing the boat out to retain its existing customers.”

But Darby added that anyone who used the card to pay their BT bills would be stung with recently introduced higher charges for non-direct debit customers.

Another drawback is that customers with another MBNA account are unable to take advantage of the balance transfer deal.
