For instance, knowing whether the airport is busy or not will help you get around Newark Airport or decide whether to book a convenient EWR car service. What’s more, learning more about this airport can be not only helpful, but also fun and engaging. Here are some of the top interesting and helpful facts about Newark Airport.

Every airport has its code and EWR is the code of Newark Liberty International Airport. Three-letter codes are assigned by the International Airport Association as each airport’s ID. In this case, EWR comprises the three letters from Newark since all codes that start with N are used by the Navy. As for the word “Liberty”, it was added to the airport name in 2002 to honor United Airlines Flight 93.

This can be a helpful piece of information for tracking flights as you’re likely to come across airport codes when flying.

Newark Airport was built in 1928 and was opened for business on October 1. Its first terminal was unveiled by Amelia Earhart in 1935. It was the very first airport in the New York metropolitan area until LaGuardia Airport opened in 1939. Nowadays, it’s one of the three airports in this region, accompanied by LGA and JFK.

Other Services :

As the first NY airport, EWR used to be one of the busiest airports not only in the U.S., but also in the world. Although it is now one of the three airports in the area, it’s still quite busy as it hosts both domestic and international flights.

In fact, in 2017, it was recorded as the sixth busiest airport for international flights and the fifteenth busiest in general in the country. This means that you should expect EWR to get a bit crowded, especially during peak travel times.

On average, around 1,200 flights per day are scheduled to and from Newark Airport. As already mentioned, the airport offers both domestic and international flights for 30 different airlines.

According to a report from 2017, approximately 24,000 people are employed at Newark Airport. The number may have changed over the past three years, but it’s a rough estimate of the employee number.

As you probably already know, Newark Airport has three separate terminals, being a hub for a number of different airlines. If you need to switch flights within EWR, you will have to get from one terminal to another. You can do so in three ways:

Here at Imperial Limo Worldwide, we offer superior airport car services across New York City and we’re here to assist you, too. Whether you want to explore the city while being on a layover at EWR or need someone to take you to the airport on time, our chauffeurs are at your disposal. After booking a flight at EWR, LGA, or JFK, feel free to reach out to us and we’ll arrange your service in no time. Navigate the city with ease thanks to our superior car service!

Airport security lines can be every traveler’s worst nightmare. Security checkpoints are almost as busy as pre-pandemic levels in the U.S. With holiday travel around the corner and more people fully vaccinated, more people are taking to the skies.

However, this year a number of U.S. airports have started programs that allow travelers to reserve a spot on a TSA line for free.

Here’s how you can skip those tedious security lines.

The programs are at four of the busiest airports in the United States:

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport have officially launched these initiatives in partnership with the TSA.

Los Angeles International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport are currently in the trial stages for similar programs.

Third-party virtual queuing platforms run the programs. For example, Whyline runs the program in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Newark.

Currently, the 90-day pilot program at Los Angeles International Airport allows travelers flying out of two of its terminals to reserve a TSA time up to three days prior to the flight or in the ticketing area of the airport. The trial program will run from October 2021, 2021 to January 18, 2022.

LAX Spokesperson Health Montgomery said the LAX program intends to “put more of the passenger journey into the hands of our customers,”

“This is another piece of that puzzle where we are making air travel more predictable and less stressful because the last thing you want to do is show up to the airport and really not know how long it’s going to take to get through security.”

Travelers at Los Angeles International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport can start booking their appointments up to 72 hours before their flight departs.

Once travelers are at these airports, they need to show a QR code and enter designated checkpoint lanes that take them to the front of the general security line.

Before you head to the airport, keep yourself informed of EWR delays by checking EWR Arrival Delays, EWR Departure Delays, or use iFly's EWR Flight Tracker. Having knowledge of Newark Newark International Airport delays will help with stress-free travel.

Newark has 3 Terminals - A, B, and C. Each terminal has 3 security checkpoints and offers TSA PreCheck. Take note that Terminal A is different, as it requires passengers to use the security checkpoint associated with its’ designated gate number.

Terminals B and C allow passengers to use any of the security checkpoints that are available for all gates within the terminal.

Terminal A is used for flights within the US and Canada and has 3 concourses each with its’ own security checkpoint. Passengers must use the security checkpoint associated with their designated gate number.

Terminal B is the main international terminal at EWR. There are 3 security checkpoints for this terminal and passengers can use any security checkpoint to access their gate.

Terminal C is operated by United Airlines for both Domestic and International Flights. There are 3 security checkpoints in terminal C and passengers can use any of these to access any Terminal C gates. However, this is a large terminal and walking distances can be long.

Security checkpoint hours are subject to change based on airport activity. See details listed below. For specific wait times go to Newark Airport website and select Security & Customs Wait Times.

The first is in Terminal A, home to Air Canada, American, Alaska, JetBlue and United Express. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the region's airports, is piloting a new program, called "Newark VirtuaLine" at checkpoints A2 (Gates 20 to 28) and A3 (Gates 30 to 39) from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

This program allows you to reserve a 30-minute slot at the security checkpoint. Starting 72 hours before your flight, you can fill out an online registration form, which asks you choose your airline, destination and flight number, along with your name, party size and contact information.

After filling it out, you'll receive a QR code which you'll display at the dedicated VirtuaLine queue during your selected 30-minute window. This way, you'll reserve your time at the security checkpoint, and don't need to worry about the possibility of long lines when you're ready to clear security.

The best part of this initiative is that it's completely free — there's no additional cost needed to partake in the service. You can access the online registration form here.

In fact, this service is more useful than ever because of the ongoing construction of the new Newark Terminal A. Due to this work, the airport has shuttered the A1 pier of the old terminal, causing Air Canada and JetBlue to consolidate into other piers and terminals, leading to longer-than-usual lines at check-in counters and security checkpoints.

Just note that the VirtuaLine initiative cannot be used for those with TSA Precheck.

Meanwhile, in Terminal B, the airport is expanding its partnership with Clear's trusted traveler program. Clear lanes are now available at the B1 security checkpoints in Terminal B, serving gates 40 to 47.

Clear uses face scans and fingerprints in lieu of the traditional ID check to confirm identity. It allows you to bypass much of the wait for a TSA agent — and it even works if you're a member of the TSA Precheck program.

You'll already find Clear lanes in United's Terminal C, and now it's expanding to one checkpoint in Terminal B. It remains to be seen if Clear will expand further in Terminal B, and whether Clear will set up shop in Newark's new Terminal A that opens next year.

“These initiatives are critical to the Port Authority’s ongoing commitment to enhance the travel experience in response to the challenges brought by the pandemic,” said Port Authority acting chief operating officer and aviation director Huntley Lawrence in a statement.

Interestingly, Newark isn't the only New York City area airport getting a streamlined security experience. At LaGuardia's new Terminal B, you can now skip the security line for $15. Dubbed “B-Fast,” the terminal is trialing a new front-of-the-line pass that takes you directly to the TSA agent for an ID check.

Meanwhile, just a few miles south on the Van Wyck Expressway is Terminal 1 at New York’s JFK Airport, which also offers a priority security option, VIP One, for a $14 fee.
