A condition in which part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm muscle. A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of your stomach bulges through the large muscle separating your abdomen and chest (diaphragm). A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of your stomach pushes up through your diaphragm and into your chest cavity. In a hiatal hernia, your stomach bulges up into your chest through an opening in your diaphragm. Hiatal hernia is caused by obesity, being pregnant, age, or thinning of the phrenoesophageal membrane. A hiatus hernia is when part of your stomach moves up into your chest.
