As with most traditional festivals in China, there is a legend behind the Chinese equivalent of Valentine's Days (known as “Qixi”), with a long history dating back to an ill-fated love affair between a cowherd and a young goddess during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). The Qixi Festival, also known as the Qiqiao Festival, is a Chinese festival celebrating the annual meeting of the cowherd and weaver girl in mythology. Tuesday, August 25 marks Qixi (七夕), the seventh day of the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar, when legend has it a pair of star-. The Qixi Festival is based on a romantic legend of a weaver girl Zhinü (Chinese: 织女) and an cowherd Niulang (Chinese: 牛郎). Chilseok, in Korea, shares the date, name and gist of the story of Qixi with China. It's Chinese Valentine's Day! Aka Qixi festival or Magpie festival.
