The problem with the method is if you set the exceptions for one scenario while enabling ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode, the system remembers those settings and keep using them whenever you turn on the DND mode on the device.

For example, if you have customized the DND settings on the device to let your family members bypass the DND to call or message in emergencies, the system will use the same settings until you make changes from Do Not Disturb menu.

Because of such exceptions, you might get calls when Do Not Disturb is enabled on your device. In this post, we will guide you on how to disable such settings on iPhone and Android and how you can customize DND to your preference each time you use the service on the phone.

The default Do Not Disturb settings on the iPhone might be the reason for getting calls despite enabling DND option. By default, iOS only silences incoming calls and messages when the iPhone is locked. That means if you are actively using the iPhone with DND enabled, you will get calls and messages from the users.

Thankfully, Apple offers you to change such settings from the DND menu. Open the Settings app on the iPhone and navigate to the Do Not Disturb menu. From the Silence menu, select Always.

After that, the iPhone will block callers even when you are using the device.

Apple allows you to select certain contacts as a favorite for easy access from the Phone app. You can also access these contacts via a long-tap on the Phone app icon. These favorites contacts are automatically excluded from the Do Not Disturb function. Meaning, anyone from your favorite contact list can call or message you when Do Not Disturb is on.

You need to change the DND settings from the iPhone Settings menu. Open the Settings app on the iPhone and go to Do Not Disturb menu. Scroll down to the Phone menu and select No One from the Allow Calls From option. Now, no one, including favorite contacts, can call you when DND is turned on.

When you enable Do Not Disturb mode on the iPhone, it will silence all the contacts from calling you. But, if the same person tries to call you three minutes later, then the call will bypass the DND mode on the device and it will ring your iPhone.

To combat that, you should disable the repeated call settings. Open Do Not Disturb menu from the iPhone settings and scroll down to the Repeated calls menu and disable the option.

On Android, each manufacturer applies its skin on top of Stock Android, which also changes the Do Not Disturb menu. As for this post, we will stick to Google’s version of Do Not Disturb on Stock Android as well as Pixel devices running the latest version of Android OS.

Let’s first understand the default exceptions of the Do Not Disturb function on Android. Google allows starred contacts and repeats callers (within the 15 minutes) to bypass the Do Not Disturb settings on the Android. You can change the exceptions from the Do Not Disturb menu.

There are two ways to access Do Not Disturb menu on Android. You can bring down the notification bar, and long-press on the Do Not Disturb icon to access the menu or open the Settings app on your device and navigate to Sound > Do Not Disturb.

From the Do Not Disturb menu, go to Calls and here you will see the exception settings. Google’s starred contacts is similar to iOS favorites. By default, the starred contacts can call you even when DND in on.

Tap on the Allow Calls menu and select ‘Don’t allow any calls’ option. I like how Google allows you to add/remove starred contacts from the DND menu itself. Go to Starred contacts menu and you can either remove the existing ones or add new ones.

You should also turn off the ‘Allow Repeat Callers’ option to disable the same callers to rule over the DND function on your Android phone.

Do Not Disturb is a feature that has been available on smartphones for quite some time now. But do you know how exactly the feature works? What happens when you put your Android or iPhone in Do Not Disturb mode? In this post, we’ll answer all the questions you might have. So, let’s get started.

Even when DND mode is enabled, you continue to receive calls, text messages, and other notifications on your phone. The only difference is that your phone will not ring or vibrate in response to those calls and notifications. You’ll see all those missed calls, text messages, and notifications when you use your phone.

Yes, you can make calls, send text messages, and use apps as you’d normally do. Enabling DND has no effect on any of those activities.

No, others will not be able to tell if your phone is in DND mode. When someone calls you, their call will go to voicemail as usual. The only time people can tell your phone is on DND is when you use it while driving because it sends an automatic message.

Now, let’s see how you can enable or disable DND mode on your Android and iPhone.

Although we’ve used a Samsung phone for this article, the steps below will work on most Android devices.

1. Open the Settings app and navigate to Notifications > Do not disturb. If you don’t see the Do not disturb option, use the Setting app’s search bar to find it.

2. Turn on the switch next to Do not disturb.

3. You can also configure your phone to activate DND on schedule. For that, tap on Add schedule. Type in a name for your DND profile and define when it should kick in. Then, tap on Save.

Once created, you can enable or disable this profile from the Do not disturb menu.

1. Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to bring up the Control Center. For older iPhones, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to pull up the Control Center.

2. Tap on Focus and then tap on Do Not Disturb to enable it.

3. If you want to schedule Do Not Disturb to activate automatically, tap the kebab menu (three-dot menu) next to the Do Not Disturb option and select Settings.

4. Under Turn on automatically, tap on Add Schedule to configure Do Not Disturb to activate automatically based on time, location, or app usage.

Although DND mode provides peace of mind, you may not want to miss calls or text messages from important people. Thankfully, you can allow calls and messages from specific people to ring even when DND is activated. Here’s how:

1. Open the Settings app and navigate to Notifications > Do not disturb.

2. Under Allowed during Do not disturb, tap on Calls and messages. Tap on Add contacts and add people who can reach you while DND is active.

1. Open the Settings app and navigate to Focus > Do Not Disturb.

2. Under Allow Notifications, tap on People and add contacts who can reach you while Do Not Disturb is active.

On the iPhone, DND is set to allow calls through if the same number calls again within three minutes. This allows you to receive urgent calls even if DND is turned on. If you wish, you can disable this feature on your iPhone. To do so, head over to Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb. Toggle off the switch next to Allow Repeated Calls.

Similarly, an Android phone may ring while in Do Not Disturb mode if the same person calls twice within 15 minutes. To disable this setting, go to Settings > Do Not Disturb. Tap on Calls and messages and toggle off the Repeated callers option.

Starting with iOS 15, the Do Not Disturb mode is now a part of the Focus feature on iPhone. You can think of Focus mode as a more advanced version of Do Not Disturb mode, with more options. For instance, Focus mode gives you control over what your home screen and lock screen should look like when you use specific Focus profiles.

Most Android phones support multi-user mode, allowing multiple users to use the same phone with different settings. If you enable DND on your phone and then switch to another user profile, your Android will follow the settings defined by the other user. So, if the other person has disabled DND for their profile, DND will be disabled when you switch to that profile.

Do Not Disturb is an excellent feature to use when you want to disconnect from the outside world and focus on your work. Aside from Do Not Disturb, there are numerous focus apps that can help you stay away from your phone.

In this article, we’ll cover what happens to texts when Do Not Disturb is on and whether you can still receive texts and calls.

Do Not Disturb (DND) is a mode that silences your iPhone or Android so you’re not distracted by incoming notifications. You will still receive notifications, texts, and calls, but your phone will not make a sound, and your screen will not turn on to display them. DND mode is now also included as one of the focus modes introduced in iOS 15 and Mac Monterey.

To turn on Do Not Disturb with an iPhone, open the Control Panel and tap the crescent moon icon. To access the customizable Control Panel with an iPhone X or later, swipe down from the top-right of the screen. If you’re using an earlier model, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

To turn on Do Not Disturb on an Android, drag down from the top of your screen to access Quick Settings, then press the Do Not Disturb icon (it looks like a circle with a line through it).

You can also turn it on from the settings app on either operating system. On iPhone, select Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb. For Android, open Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb.

Yes, you will continue receiving texts. Do Not Disturb mode on iOS and Android prevents notifications from making noise or appearing on screen. It does not block incoming text messages or phone calls.

If you aren’t receiving texts on your Android or iPhone, it’s likely caused by another problem.

When Do Not Disturb is on, texts go straight to your messages app (or iMessage for iPhone users) without pinging your lock screen or making your usual text notification sound.

On Apple devices, you can still see notifications from the Notification Center. This can be accessed from the Lock Screen by swiping up from the middle of the screen.

Likewise, on both iPhone and Android, icon number badges will still appear if these are enabled. These are the red numbers that indicate how many notifications you have in each app.

When Do Not Disturb mode is on, people can call you, but you will not hear your phone ring—unless you’ve added that person to a list of exceptions. For example, in the Do Not Disturb settings, you can allow calls from specific contacts (like emergency contacts) for which your phone will still display notifications.

Likewise, you can add other exceptions such as repeat callers (if there are repeated calls from the same phone number more than once within 15 minutes, a notification will appear).

However, your phone will still receive the incoming call. In other words, the call will not be sent straight to voicemail. But, you will only know about the missed call via your phone or contacts app after it has rung out.

DND, Do Not Disturb, is a commonplace calling feature found on phones of all sorts: Smartphones, VoIP phones, and softphones, just to name a few. Simply put, it’s a mode that mutes all forms of notifications—incoming call rings, sounds, visual alerts, and even message vibrations—on a phone.

It’s important to note that, for smartphones, Do Not Disturb is in effect whether your phone is locked or open. If the DND mode is on while you are actively on your phone, you won’t get any sound or visual interruptions for incoming calls and messages.

Smartphones also allow you to customize the DND mode to your heart’s content. When it’s enabled, you can specify if you want calls from specific people or message alerts from specific apps to come through. Notifications from these whitelisted contacts and apps will still ring through even though all other notifications are silenced during the time that you have DND on.

Phone calls will go straight to your voicemail when the Do Not Disturb mode is enabled on iPhone and Android devices. You will not receive any type of popups or other interruptions on your screen.

For VoIP phones and softphones, the Do Not Disturb mode will send calls to whichever failover destination you’ve selected in your VoIP service’s admin portal. Most of the time, a failover destination is your work voicemail box. But it doesn’t have to be. You can set the failover to be any feature in your VoIP phone system—an ACD queue, an auto attendant, or even your cell phone number.

OnSIP, a hosted VoIP provider, allows you to have multiple phones registered (up to 10 registrations per user) at the same time. And with remote working and business travel, today’s employees have softphones on their mobile devices in addition to desk phones in their offices. In this case, what’s the answer to the question, “does do not disturb send calls to voicemail?”

To address this, OnSIP developed a setting called Global Availability. Users enable and disable this setting in the OnSIP web or desktop app (our softphone applications) by selecting one of two options: Available or Away. When the Away option is chosen, it takes effect globally. Another way of putting it: the Away option sets all of your registered desk phones and softphones to Do Not Disturb. Any call that comes to your extension or phone number will go directly to your failover destination, no matter how many phones you may have.

You do still have the option to set Do Not Disturb on an individual phone basis. If you mark your Global Availability as Available, but set DND on your VoIP desk phone, a call will not ring that phone, but it will still ring your desktop or mobile app.
